5870 with a Q6600

at these times i hate having an nvidia 680i motherboard, cant get my Q6600 even near 3.0ghz :( when running a 5870 with a stock q6600 how limited would it really be? a significant amount?

Change the motherboard for a P43 or P45 board so you can get a decent clock on the quad and grab a 5870... you need atleast 3gig, 3.6+ better to get your moneys worth out the GPU.

You'll be unlikely to get a good clock out the 965 board its just not designed to supply the amperage.

Yep, 2.4GHz would be a substantial bottleneck, more so when less than 2 cores are utilized by a game.

3gig on a 680i should be ok - 1333 or 1334 FSB - you'll most likely hit massive FSB holes at other FSBs. Aslong as your not running all 4 RAM slots populated should only need to boost FSB/NB voltages by +0.1... if you have all 4 slots populated or running RAM above 800MHz then it might not work so well.

Catch 22 then. New GFX and new motherboard. Halfway there to getting a new system

Probably a P43 board unless you need extra features (like the one in my post above) overclocking wise should be as good as a P45 for all but the very most extreme overclocks.

If you shop around on the RAM you might just be able to fit in one of the cheaper gigabyte P55 boards with an i5 setup and a 5870.

Personally I wouldn't be in a hurry to spend the extra money just yet tho.

Tempted to do the following. Sell my GA-965P-DS3, 9800GT, Vista x64 and then get a 2nd hand motherboard with 5870 card etc.

Will do some more sums tomorrow etc. May see if I can get a 2nd hand board before getting the GFX card

Well the 5870 is working great alongside mine! You're not going to win any benchmarks but gaming wise there's no hold up.
Yup, I think the only game where I'd see any real improvement is in Crysis/Warhead and that's only because 5fps can make a noticeable difference in that game. Otherwise my Q6600 does me fine and dandy for gaming atm.

Wanting to play GTA4 maxed out etc along with GRID.

Looking at the new COD due for release shortly.

Other than a few other games system is used for internet and VMWare etc.

I'm running Windows 7 x64 enterprise. Trial version at the moment, but once I have sorted things out I'll install one of my Pro retail copies

If you can clock the Q6600, i5 would be a bit of a rubbish upgrade.

Heck, I can't even warrant an i7 upgrade, need something with substantial gains before I move from my trusty Q6600, what's even better about it is the fact it only cost £115 brand new and I've had it since June 2008; value for money or what! :D

The funny thing is I got a Q6600 2 years ago imported from the US for the same price they're selling for now :)

Stick with your q6600 and clock it,i have the p5q pro turbo and it is a very good board.
I also have a i7 setup and playing games there is not much difference at all.

Am running a Q6600 the 95w one on a GA P35 DS3L and no hassles got it to 3.0 gig first time of trying, i don't know what acceptable temps are so i have only left it at that, mine sits around high 30's idle and can hit high 50's under load, what's safe temps with these.
