Hey I have 1 5870 already and have ordered my 2nd benq 24" 1080 monitor due to get my 3rd for xmas. Would I be able to game at max settings still if crossfired? Also does the sapphire adaptor only work with the 5xxx series as I don't want to be stuck with a future useless set up

No.
1gb ram on the cards limits them.
meaning if you use AA, then the cards will drown and stutter and such due to the amount of textures it has to move.
2gb ram on each card is minimum if you ask me.

sapphire adaptor should work fine.

you be able to play but not at max settings.

The sapphire adapter well work with any DP connections on any card.
What resolution do you play on? If it's 1080p or under then 1gb per card is enough.

yeah I knew the memory would be a factor but thought the sheer power of a 5870 xfire might make it possible on highest settings on most games

Back when i had my 5970 i had most games maxed with no issues with aa enabled in eyefinity (3x 1920x1080)

So you'll be fine in pretty much all games with 2xaa on as a 5970 is generally slower than crossfire 5870's

Bit of a blanket statement there. It'd be very possible to play a load of games with a 1GB card. 2GB is of course preferable (which is why I got mine) but saying "no" is definitely not a "correct" answer. It's simply dependant on how much RAM a game will use at 5760x1200/1080.

I would be wanting to play at 1080. All I want is to be able to play my games at close to max with 3 of these

using one of these

I remember somebody in another tread said the 6XXX series wouldnt be compatible with this adaptor. I kinda feel locked into my 1gb 5870 now and already have my 2nd monitor on the way. It would be easier if the new cards had a standard display port as they are 2gb are they not? So my choice is another 5870 to hopefully power through them due to lack of 2gb memory or the new cards will work with this adaptor.
