Hi Everybody.

I am into bang for £ photography, using a 400D with a 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS for mostly landscape work.

I am looking to get a couple of ND filters, but I am unsure what to go for. Some are substantially more expensive than others. Ideally I would like two, maybe a 4 and an 8 but if it's too expensive I could just get one.

I have seen a Tiffen kit for £50 which has a 3, 6 and 9. Kood's for £15 each and Hoya's for £40 each.

*edit also seen the Cokin P series, is this a better option as I would only need an adapter if I ever upgrade a lens.

I really don't know what to go for, so some pointers would be great! :)

Thanks :)

I'm not big on landscape photography, so taking that into account I've settled on a single screw-in B+W 10 stop filter. I've also got the cheapo Cokins, but they're junk and give me purple fringing if I stack more than a couple, so aren't going to see further use. I'd buy something decent and save for the next filter. I realise you said you're big on landscapes, but cheap filters are an annoyance.

edit: if you want my Cokins, cover postage and you can have them.

Be aware your lenses have rotating front elements (i.e. they rotate when you focus) - this is a real pain when using strong ND's.

I use a B+W ND110, which is a 10 stop filter and hence pretty extreme - consequently I can't focus with the filter on, so have to focus then screw on the filter. It's quite difficult to maintain focus whilst screwing a filter on with a rotating front focus! On this basis, you may find it easier to use square filters.

HiTech filters seem to be well rated, and they are well priced too if you go for the 85mm version. I believe these will also fit into a Cokin P Series holder, so you could get the Cokin holder and HiTech fiters for a good bang for buck system. I intend to get this setup at some point, but predominantly for ND grads.

Google HiTech filters for more info and the UK supplier :)

I am also considering getting some, so I be interested in what other say....

I let Capt Doufos buy them, then I just borrow them to try out...;-)
