590 & 6990 get dated

'Bout ****ing time. Shame that the 6990 will be a month late (no 'r'), seems a little silly as a move, as I don't think it helped AMD greatly after the GTX5xx launch either, besides 'force' people to go green.

AMD are foolish. If people are like me, with the money ready we will buy the first one to be released.

NVidia and AMD cards both have their positive and negatives - I am not a fanboy of either.

Nvidia - solid drivers; quiet cards but with bizarre crashing and stability issues. And a hefty price tag.

AMD - weak drivers, loud cards. Surprisingly stable and more cost effective.

i thought they said the 6990 is out in 1Q of 2011.

they shouldn't keep delaying it

amd could have released the card a day or two after NVidia released they card or even on the same day... that way Nvidia can't change they card even if they wanted too.

Only a handful of people will buy straight away - the majority of sales will come later as people wait to see prices and benchmarks of each.

I'm looking forward to seeing the 6990.

' If ' true, that number of stream processors is higher than what you would get with two 6970's, or is it referring to some other tech, like something fusion related?

Been putting off buying 2 570's to wait for these, now its telling me I gotta wait till april.
Might just see what the nvidia is like and then make up my mind.

Delaying the launch allows AMD to tinker with card clocks, configuration and price to better fight NVidia. My guess is this will be very similar to GTX570/580 vs 6950/6970 where NVidia will have the overall performance crown, but AMD will come close at a more attractive price.

I'm guessing it's a misprint, based on old pre-Caymann slide that was doing the rounds about the 6990.

The "full" Caymann GPU is 1536-shaders, and it does not seem realistic that a larger GPU would have been created just for the dual-GPU card. The power envelope for dual 6970s running at full whack would be well beyond that which is acceptable for a single PCI-e slot anyway, so AMD will need to make use of their power containment system. Since power-draw will be the main limiting factor for both companies this time around, the massive development and manufacturing effort required to produce an even larger and more power-hungry GPU would not be worth it.

The 6990 will not be more than 3072 shaders. But it will still be a beast!

Christ look how big that thing is! Who needs to be a keyboard warrior when you can give someone a 6990 around the face? (Obviously when your warranty has expired and it bricks itself :p)
