590 & 6990 get dated

NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 590 video card is expected to arrive in mid-March 2011
Maybe just in time for when i finish builting my HTPC :)

(But it won't fit if it going be longer then 11.5" !! )

What sort of performance do you think this will have?
Comparable to what cards in xfire or sli now
if it has the higher stream gpus , it should be as quick or faster than 2 580 but it depend what the clock speeds

but nobody knows for sure.

AMD are foolish. If people are like me, with the money ready we will buy the first one to be released.

NVidia and AMD cards both have their positive and negatives - I am not a fanboy of either.

Nvidia - solid drivers; quiet cards but with bizarre crashing and stability issues. And a hefty price tag.

AMD - weak drivers, loud cards. Surprisingly stable and more cost effective.

I don't think nvidia has a reputation for quiet/cool cards lol.

Is it just me or is solid drivers in the same sentence as bizarre crashing and stability issues not out of place. Where as amd have weak drivers but are stable.

I'm guessing it's a misprint, based on old pre-Caymann slide that was doing the rounds about the 6990.

The "full" Caymann GPU is 1536-shaders, and it does not seem realistic that a larger GPU would have been created just for the dual-GPU card. The power envelope for dual 6970s running at full whack would be well beyond that which is acceptable for a single PCI-e slot anyway, so AMD will need to make use of their power containment system. Since power-draw will be the main limiting factor for both companies this time around, the massive development and manufacturing effort required to produce an even larger and more power-hungry GPU would not be worth it.

The 6990 will not be more than 3072 shaders. But it will still be a beast!

I'm not sure TBH. 1720sp would be a strange typo as really it should have been 1920sp.

I did hear just before the HD6970/50 hit, that ATI had two chip options and went with the smaller. I put this down to confusion over the HD6950 soft mod at the afterwards, but maybe ATI was aiming for 1920 and just failed to produce the volume in time.

What is all this about 1720 shaders?

The article suggests that the dual GPU 6990 will have a total of 3840 shaders, so 1920 per-GPU. This is the same as the pre-Caymann rumours. I suppose it's possible that AMD are using an alternate high shader-count chip, but given the power constraints of the card it seems unlikely. Perhaps AMD have found that a lower-clocked higher shader-count GPU gives better performance when power-constrained (i.e. offers better power efficiency). But still, the advantage would need to be high enough to justify the time and expense of a new larger GPU design.

any news on price yet?

ATI's top slot is sub £450 and Nvidia seem happy to go to a hundred or so over that.

I think the HD6990 will come in around current GTX580 prices with the GTX580 then dropping to the £299 - £350 slot that seems to be opening up.

A dual Femri based card would anyone's guess £500 ~ depending on availability, £349 paper launched six months early maybe.
