Hi All,

I'm building two brand news systems for my kids (for their saved up $$$ :D). I have all the parts, they wanted a rgb bling (aio h100i platinum, x570 tomahawk, 32gb corsair dominator RAM, seasonic focus 850w psu, Lian Li lancool mesh rgb case, 3080 GPus (once they will become available) ). They are gaming on 1440p@165 monitors.

For CPU if price difference is indeed $100USD, I was leaning toward 5900x since it has more cores and more cache, however it will have 2 chiplets with CCX in each which might add latency comparing to single CCX on 5800x. I'm not planning to upgrade their PCs for the next 4-5yrs.

Please advise.

Any help would be much appreciated.

If the 5900X has a 6+6 CCX config, then the 5800X will be faster when 8 cores are needed.

If the 5900X has a 8+4 CCX config, then the 5900X will always be faster in everything.

I'm thinking it will be the latter.

I like 8+4 CCX config idea, however I'm 99.99% certain it will be 6+6 CCX config. Look at some info leaked by geekbench tests. For both 5950x and 5900x it shows 2 x 32mb L3 cache pools. Also symmetric design simplifies manufacturing process.

Well if it's 6+6 then that would explain why it's only £100 more for 50% more cores.
or you pay premium for 5800x for having a single CCX. I wish AMD (very smart on their end) would release 5700x (65w 8core). I'm still undecided between buying two 5800x or 5900x for my kids builds. They might be doing some streaming in the background. Also I'm not planning on upgrading their PCs for 4-5yrs. However if price difference will be indeed $100USD, perhaps grabbing 5900x makes more sense. I dunno

i just flashed with my kids two MSI Tomahawk x570 without CPU with zen3 BIOS, everything went smooth. BTW... The x570 chipset fan is a noisy at full speed LOL. At the moment I'm leaning toward buying two 5900x CPUs.... overkill but with some headroom/future proof. They should be set for the next 5 years with potential GPU upgrade in 2-3 years...

Assuming single core scores are very similar across 5xxxx CPUs, potentially at this time 5600x makes the most sense for what you get (perf/$$$). However in a year or two it is hard to predict if games will be optimized for more +6 cores usage or not.
Since this is the "last stand" for AM4 platform and DDR4, IMHO buying the best you can afford is wiser than buying what you need today. Thus I'm going with 32Gb of RAM and leaning toward 5900x ( or at least 5800x ).
If you are one users who likes to upgrade (sell old /buy new) whenever they have need, going with 5600x for now and then upgrading to stronger 5xxxx maybe more sense. I dunno. LOL

that is a lot of RGB, are you sure your kids will go to bed after being lit up by all of these :D

tho just in time to make the case compete with your decorated Christmas’s tree right

So true :p Good thing you can set many profiles, but damn they look very nice.

BTW.. I almost finished two builds, the lian li cases were very easy to work with. Hopefully I can buy two 5900x on Thursday to complete the builds.
I still have the film on glass doors, and the static picture doesn't justify corsair lights :)

Because the sales of the 5900/5950 would suffer for a start.
Its very likely, the 5800/5900/5950 will be 'better' than the 5600 in games. But for the price, its a few fps. If you look back at the 3xxx series, the 3950 beats all, but its sometimes only 3 fps more than the 3600.
A threadripper will probably beat all, doesnt mean its the best gaming cpu. There has to be something other than fps taken into the calculation as to which is the best.

Do you want 5%+ performance for 50%+ price? Or do you want 95% performance -50% price. I mean why stop at the 5900, why not get the 5950, as that will beat the 5950.
Everyone will weight these criteria differently, some will want best bang for buck, some will want the best no matter what.

True but if the prices actually hold, IMHO $100USD more for 4 cores is totally worth going 5900x over 5800x. However if there was a 5700x for $379USD coming out now (possibly coming out next Spring), the $170USD price difference would probably make my decision much harder to make. Honestly the best is either to go now for 5600x or 5900x; or WAIT till next year for 3600 or 5700x. Myself since I'm not planning to upgrade my kids PCs for next 5yrs or so, I want to buy the best I can afford.

do you know what time nda will be lifted for reviews to come out? is it going to be the same time as zen3 will be available to purchase?

EDIT: I'm still leaning toward 5900x (over 5800x) due to the "small" price difference for extra 4 cores. I wish there was a clear price cut between 8 core and 12 core.... If there only was 5700x 65w at $379USD :P
