5900X to 5800X3D - opinions?

Hi all,

I built my current 5900X rig back in Jan 2021, the only game I really play now is MS Flight Simulator 2020. Tests have shown that this game benefits greatly from 3D V-Cache technology. Wondering if I should swap over?

I know I would be loosing 4 physical cores. However, I'm sure I will upgrade the whole platform in another 12-18 months anyway, long before that becomes an issue. The 5800X3D is now quite competitively priced and I could offset much of the cost by selling my 5900X. The move (won't call it an upgrade) would cost about £100.

I plan to continue to use my 3080 for now, and will see what RDNA 3 yields in Dec. I plan on upgrading my GPU along with moving to a 4K monitor in the next year and then upgrade the platform further down the road.

Thanks

I would say if you only play MSFS and not other games that also benefit from the 5800X3D then save your money for a 40 series card and DLSS 3 which will double your framerate (the increased latency is not important in Flight Simulator) or wait to see what AMD's FSR 3 (which promises to do similar) will bring.

Games yes, Productively big fat no. It’s a great gaming cpu but if you have apps that use lots of cores and need clock speed your are going to be disappointed.

Primary for gaming and MS flight sim, go for it. Sure ive seen flight sim benchmarks where the 3D cache in the 5800X3D shines and even beats out zen4 and top end Intel chips.

Productivity its fine, not much different to my 5800X I had before the 5800X3D which was installed yesterday.
I’ve had to run the FCLK at 1800Mhz instead of 1900Mhz so guess the new chips dont like higher infinity fabric.

If zen4 chips get 3D cache in future, games will only get better support on the 5800X3D also.

See the big 5800X3D thread for more info

I did this very recently, far smoother games. Using a 3080.

I managed to upgrade for like £60. Cleared over £270 on ebay and the new chip was £335.

The other benefit is that the 5800x3d uses less power, which means a cooler case. 5900x used 100w when gaming, 5800x3d is more like 60w.

Barely any difference at 4k because the gpu is the bottleneck. The 5800x3d shines at 1080p

But your existing 5900x obviously has 4 more cores and can be overclocked which the x3d can't. I suspect the 1080p benchmarks would be closer if the x3d was compared to an overclocked 5900x. The 5900x is the same price as the x3d too now.

What res do you game at now?
4k i would say maybe dont bother with a 3080 unless you turn settings down.
1080p, 1440p or ultrawide, the 5800X3D will do better in games than the 5900X.
Productivity, stay with the 5900X

I'm very tempted to upgrade from 3800x to the 5800x3d. If I were solely playing flight sim I'd sit tight with the 5900x
Why?
5800X3D has been proven to hugely benefit flight sim

Fair, I'd of thought that something like flight sim would have been more than just gaming and have to have more productive core power. If it's been proven then fair doos

I've managed to get mine running at 1900MHz without issue (need to tighten up my timings however).

I went from a 5900X and it cost me around £100 but I couldn't be happier. Yes, some games are unaffected, but in many it's noticeably faster (War Thunder is now locked to my frame rate limit of 237 at 1440p, Spider-Man Remastered ran much better and overall games feel smoother with better 1% lows).

Thanks for the replies all. I currently have a 1440 ultrawide and RTX 3080, so it could be beneficial. At the moment, my FS2020 main thread performance is holding back my GPU somewhat.

If I go for a 5800X3D, I would probably stick with the X570 platform until Zen 5/2024.

On a side note, I have also been thinking about upgrading to a 4K display and upgrading my GPU at the same time to accommodate this (unfortunately a very expensive exercise) - I have had my ultrawide since 2016. Appreciate that the gains in FS2020 afforded by the 5800X3D would start to diminish as I become more GPU bound. Anyhow, that's another discussion and I'm on the fence with that one!

i went from a 5900x to a 5800x3d as well. 10/10 would recommend
i play ffxiv 1440p max settings (with a 3080) and previously would get framerate dips with the 5900x - now it's basically pegged at 165fps with no/minimal dips

Thanks again for the replies all. It's also good to hear positive feedback from some who have made this swap. FS2020 is performance is my top priority for my gaming rig.
