5950x Overheating

Unscrew the rad part of the AIO and turn it the other way around so the tubes are at the bottom then retest. If it is not totally full then the pump could be struggling to push the water around the aio.

Grim5 gave great advice. If the temps rise extremely quickly then it is a mounting or pump issue and not airflow/radiator issue.

Agree and will try a different cooler should this not work.

I can't afford to have a £700 cpu getting to those temperatures that quickly and need to rule cooler out or as culprit before looking to RMA cpu.
 
Your tubes ae going to the top, so if there is any air within your AiO then it'll accumulate and water won't be pumped efficiently, try resetting with the tubes at the bottom, run it on idle for a while to let any air go to the non-used end, and retest.

I can certainly give this a go.

I do have a brand new unopened cooler master hyper 212 evo cpu cooler but not sure i could use this to test with such a high heat cpu type.

Let me know if this IS something I could test with.

It’s a 105watt TDP chip, as long as the 212 is rated at that it’s should be fine. The T junction temp reading is somewhat irrelevant. As long as the cooler is wicking the heat away and the RTX 3090 isn’t roasting everything in the case you shouldn’t have an issue. I’d personally stress test the system hard and see what throttles

think the 212 is rated at 185w max.

I've stress tested pretty hard but temps go well into the 90's so I dare not leave it doing that for long.
 
To be honest, on a 5950X with PBO enabled 90 C is the norm in a full load situation. With an extremely good cooler you might get it a little closer to 80, but I doubt anyone is much below 80 without a chiller or phase change.

It's a chip with a relative small die size and some pretty intense power output with PBO on. I've seen close to 240 watts in cinebench with PBO and curve optimiser. The chip just can't effectively transfer the heat from the silicon fast enough at such high power so it cooks itself. You can easily see it in how water cooling really isn't much ahead of air cooling. The coolers capacity isn't really the big issue. A better cooler will help a tiny bit, but the real cause is below the IHS.

My advice would be to put PBO on but set your PPT to something like ~180 watts. Still a nice boost over stock and the chip becomes much easier to manage. It'll still be warm, but not quite so alarming.
 
I've got a 5900X and a monster AIO, the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420mm. It's fine stock, ~65 under stress, but even with that cooler it hits 85C with Ryzen Master Auto OC enabled.

I honestly would not bother with a hyper 212 with this CPU.
 
Update:

Returned the CPU as I wasn't comfortable with the heat it was producing. I fully tested AIO and it seemed to be running fine.

CPU was returned (bought brand new from supplier) and they've issued a replacement immediately and accepted a faulty return.

Just installed new CPU and much much better temps along with higher default core boost etc.

So pleased that's not sorted.

If the old cpu was causing high temps then it could be that the IHS was not flat - but of sanded May have fixed that
