5970 60c at idle, 100c at load is this normal?

Yea. It's fairly common for graphic card to idle at around 55-60C due to powerplay won't be kicking in when hooking up to more than one monitor.

A few suggestions;

• Give the heatsink and fans a good blast with compressed air to get rid of any dust.
• Try to improve the airflow in the case.
• Replace the TIM with some liquid metal

I wouldn't use that TIM above it's conductive and capacitive, if you get it on any components on the GPU chip it will short it out, AMD chips have lots of components on the top of the chip area so avoid this TIM and use a none-conductive and none-capacitive TIM like this one below.

I've never had any problems using it, and the temps will be better than any paste.

Just spread it thinly on the copper surface until it gleams.

"Better" would mean 0.5-1C difference in most cases comparing to other non-concductive pastes. Not worth taking a risk for minimal return.

It always was a hot card, but I don't remember it getting anywhere near 100C. More like 70-80. Only the recent cards have gone to 90+.

CLU is fine as long as you're not careless.

Use masking tape around the core as you apply it.

I had a weird issue not long ago where one of my cards usage would rocket to 100% when I'd open GPUz. Wonder if anything similar is going on here?

3.75 degrees at load in Stulid's testing.

No problems, worth the risk IMO, it's down to the individual. There a lot of people who stay away from IC diamond because it scratches as well.

You shouldn't be surprised the new range of AMD cards operate at 100c the R290x can hit that easily under stressful situations and they are designed to work at these temps.

Noticed you mentioned in the OP that you're using Speedfan to control GPU temperatures. What kind of temps do you get if you leave the card to decide it's own fan speed? At least that way you'd be able to compare to reviews to see if your card is hotter, or if you've simply set the fan to a quieter and hotter profile.

Are you using more than one monitor? When I go into extended display my temps jump by about 15 to 20c, but the clocks also go up too.

I still think the high temp of running furmark should not be used as reference to load temp for gaming.

I dont have the card in right now because I thought it was best to keep it out due to the temps, will test it once its back in.

Was using Speedfan to push the fan speed higher than standard. At idle (around 20%) I have been getting 60-70C but I was pushing it to 37% which was keeping it closer to 60C and occasionally below.

Hmm neever used speedfan to set my gpu, is it same as the others that you set it as a % of 100 and it stays there? just if its set and doesnt change might be why your hitting 100c

I had it set up with a curve so it adjusts according to the curve you set. When it was hitting 100C the fan was at 100% though as some have pointed out this was probably more due to furmark being aweful. Though still getting wayy higher temps than i should have when mining.


P.S thermal stuff just arrived, will update with how it goes. Also free Haribo? lol
