Just built a pc for someone and they want there 5970 clocked.

So i clocked it to 850/1200 with 1.149v, (even tried 1.174v)

It's a i7 920 DO @4.0 using an asus R3. (also tried other boards)

I tested FurMark for 3 hours no problem, but had to have the fan at 100%:D to keep stable.

But When i test bfbc2 and other games, after 20minutes or so the pc just freezes.
Of course this only happends once the cards overclocked. i know how to over clock cpu's and graphics card, but this is baffling me.

At 100% fan speed, these are the temps i was getting in FurMark.

Has anyone got any idea why it would freeze in games but not in FurMark ?
Could the vddc phases be getting to hot whiles gaming ?
Would an after market cooler sort the problem ?

If someone has had this issues after clocking, or anyone got an idea, please let us know ;)

Cheers.

Might just need more juice.

I found my 5970 could pass furmark at lower voltages but heaven benchmark and bc2 would make it crash until i nudged the voltages up a bit more.

I tried 900 @ 1100 with 1.149 v. seems ok. dont seem to like 1200 mem.
I did try 1.162 and 1.174 850 1200, but no luck. should i go even higher ?

What volts you using. i wonder if the mem need little more volts, but of course u cant do this afterburner, only the core.

Cheers.

I think the memory is clocked too high. Try lowering it to 1150 and see what that does. My card is the same, will do 1000 on the core but any more than 1160 on the memory and it throws hissy fits.

Yeah you're right, anything over that and it begs me to downclock lol
But happy with 900 1150 :) my other one went to 900 1200 no problem before.

Guess it's luck of the draw ;)
What volts you running ? and you at 900 1150 ?

Cheers

Currently running it at 850/1155 @ 1.087v to match the 5870. No point OCing higher for day-to-day use as this setup is overkill for the res I'm running.

900 on the core needs around 1.12v.

only 1.12v i must try that now then :) is you're 5870 not clocked then ?
You running on auto fan ?.. as it's so hot, i set my @45.
I was thinking of getting a Accelero Extreme 5790 fan.

Mine is running 900/1200 @ 1.187v, going lower causes lockups in BC2 and heaven benchmark for me, though I need to settle down on a clock and test it properly

Using fan profiles in Afterburner to set the fan to 43% @ 58°C. In Bc2 the temps are high 60's, does hit low 70's at times.

I'd read reviews about the Acceleo Extreme before buying it. Causes more trouble than its worth. Stock cooler is more than upto the job and isn't that loud, compared to my old 4870x2 :P

Been trying to do a fan profile, but the silly little box thing to adjust what fan speed i wanr as what temps etc is getting me moody lol only want 2 boxes, but when i move them about, more little boxes appear lol how do you do it lol

Part from that, looks like 850/1155 @ 1.087v is sweet as. and 900/1200 @ 1.187v also :)

Thanks for the help guys :)
