5970 overkill for 1920x1200?

If you have the money to spare then why even consider getting nothing but the best? If money is an issue then of course a lesser GFX card would be best.

No:

Examples of needing a bit more welly that I have seen lately are where Stalker clear sky brought my Sli 260 GTX to its knees with high Sun on... but now at max in-game settings its's just dandy (I love that effect!) ... I even used to have slow down at max settings with COD5 when the flamethrower was up close & personal. And, of course, everbody's favourite 'badly' coded game Crysis benefits a bit too ....

I would say it is not (complete!) overkill for 'Maximum' ingame settings ... Plus, there's always the ability to tweak quality a bit via the driver settings (CCC, NV CP) in windows if you wish to push a bit more ... and it will do the business for a reasonable amount of time methinks too .. (unlike the X1900XT I bought at release a few years ago which was reeled in quite quick IIRC - my 5970 cost me about £80 more than I paid for the X1900XT then!)

I got the 5970 because I was interested in players games in the future as well as today. It takes a lot to max out DiRT2 in DX11 and the 5970 is the only card that doesn't it comfortably, without even considering future DX11 titles like Aliens Versus Predator. That said, even with a 4870 before I was able to max out most games and get great performance so it's definitely not necessary. Getting a 5870 now and a second when more demanding games arrive would probably be a better option. I only went for the 5970 because I can't run a second dual-slot GPU with my current setup (my motherboard supports triple-Crossfire but I'd lose all my PCI slots).

Would you say so? A 5870 will cover all bases (details on max) for 1920x1200?
Depends on what games you want to run, if you're going to upgrade the card not too long after then stick with a 5870 but in the future the more power hungry games should still be running well on a 5970 at that resolution so it'd last longer and you'd see a performance increase while using it. It'd keep your frames up for the future but 5870 can run them now with that resolution so decide on whether you want flexibility to go elsewhere or not.

I would say because I love AA and want lots of it. :p

Plus if you ever feel inclined to run an Eyefinity setup the card will be great for it.
