5D Replacement - soon

1. 12 million full frame CMOS
2. 5 fps, max. 21 continuous shooting of raw images
4. 35 area subarea light metering system; central point metering available for the 3.5% central area
5. 15 point high accuracy cross focusng AF system. f2.8 high accuracy focusing available at the central focusing point
9. Mg-Al alloy body, dust proof, water proof
10. 14-bits DIGIC III processor
12. 16:9 shooting available at 8 million pixels

All this for under 1K!!! :O (would be awesome).

i cannot see what possible advantage 16:9 shooting has. sounds like a completely retarded option to me.

if canon are leaving the announce of the new 5D 3 years then the specs better be absolutely mind blowing.

Imo it actually shouldn't be that hard to do if they decided the market was there.
e.g. look at Sony A700 specs:

1. 12Mp CMOS but APS-C rather than FF
2. it'll do that
3. dust reduction, yup
4. it's actually got 40 rather than 35, I can't remember exactly what the spot meter area is but iirc it is 3-4%
5. it has 11 with central double cross high accuracy f2.8 ability
6. it's 95% & 0.9x
7. 3" 930,000 pixel
8. iso 100-6400
9. Mg Al body with significant dust/waterproofing (better than EOS 40D's) but not totally weatherproof. Pentax K10D etc. are fully weatherproof & aren't dear though.
10. obviously Digic III is an existing Canon tech so that would be a given
11. HDMI, yup
12. 16:9, yup but it's 10MP iirc rather than 8Mp.
13. don't see why you wouldn't want as many lenses supported as possible - A700 supports both screw driven & SSM
14. 40D has LCD liveview so that shouldn't be a problem
15. grip again shouldn't be a problem although you probably wouldn't get the body & grip for under 1K

I paid under £700 for my UK supplied (not grey market) A700 body (which of course also has in-body IS) so if you look at what the specs are & what would need to be upgraded imo it should be doable for an extra £300 retail.
Whether they wanted to do it for that price, that's the question rather than could it be done ;)

A bit like widescreen tv?

I have 16:9 on my compact and it's really nice. Trouble is then I get to waste loads of paper when printing.

Having said that, I don't see much use for a 16:9 dslr sensor. The change in sensor size wuold mean a crop of EF or EF-S lenses images to athe sensor, and you may as wekk do that in pchop.
