£5k - 3rd car for dad duties

Exactly this. A Dad Car needs to be reliable and have a huge boot for when your little darling informs you that you’re the designated taxi for the Scout/Guide pack this weekend.

Keep a sharp hatchet in the boot in case you have to go Full Uncle Buck.

That’s where a brand new iPace with 3p a mile running costs will do the job!

This car is literally for one purpose, creating a viable excuse for buying something stupid e.g the Exige I mentioned previously.

I don’t particular want to be spending £500 a year on insurance but now I’m getting close to 40 my Focus RS costs less than £300 to insure.

The used market seems to suggests that you pay a premium for anything small and petrol which is understandable. I’m therefore thinking something a little different/thirsty could be in real terms cheaper - the random Impreza for example. I’m just mindful that I don’t particularly want to endure high running costs over and above fuel.

If you want a lot of dadmobile for your money have a look a Lexus offerings. £5k looks like it gets you a very decent looking GS300. If you want that diplomatic look you could go for a LS430.

Sir can choose red or black!

Perhaps more of a grandad mobile, but it has a mini arm rest fridge and you could fit quite a few children in the boot as well.

Do you want something totally practical and cheap including running costs, or are you after something more? If you buy an old luxury brand with complex technology, then you could encounter a large bill if something goes wrong.

No, cheap and 4 doors that’s really my only ask. No desire for an old barge with the associated running costs.

I don’t want anything too nice so my special car feels more special - I appreciate that might seem like an odd comment.

Don't get the 1.0 Ecoboost at that age (i.e. nearly 10 years), as they will be due an expensive cambelt.

<sarcasm>Also all Ecoboosts blow up</sarcasm>

A panda came up locally for the same sort of money, not a 100hp though unfortunately.

On holiday next week, when I’m back I think I’m going to put my Focus RS up for sale and get the ball rolling. After almost 6 years I’m still torn about whether it’s the right thing to do.
