A v8 Range rover, doesent require an MOT or insurance and can be easily towed by a vectra if the worse was to happen

lol im guessing the OP wont understand that one ;) whatever did happen to that in the end, did it pass the MOT?

On topic, im guessing a mondeo / xsara of some sort will be suggested.

I'd say a BMW 520i, cheap insurance, good looks and great interior. Available with loads of kit too.

Definately what i'd have for £5k if insurance was a problem.

Cheap insurance?

Get a Focus or something, fast without being dangerous and a reasonably good drive.

5k might get you a TDCi Focus Zetec with a climate pack. however if I was you and you can 'brave' a bigger car, id do so, you can get something like a mondeo 2.0 ghia x for about 3k that will have heated leather seats, climate control, etc etc etc....

My dad has a Focus, not a bad car. 52 reg 1.8 TDCI. I guess I wouldn't mind a Focus, I just felt like something a bit different. It feels like more of a town car rather than a cruiser, which is what I would prefer.

.

Yes, very cheap, as larger cars go, i did some quotes when i was 17 and it was about £150 cheaper than my omega to insure at the time. 75 miles per day motorway, and £5000, he'd have to be mad to buy a tin can focus.

He wants a cruiser and short of a 7 series class of car he wont do better than a nice 5, and £5000 gets a huge selection of 520i's as they go for much less than their bigger engined brothers.

ok, you would rather not a hatchback because its more of a 'town car', im guessing your after a barge?

5 series it is then :]

I would hardly call a Focus a tin can, they may be smallish but they are just as good as any saloon on the motorway.

i bought a Ghia X Mondeo as a first car. Paid around 4k with the RSAP kit :)

Could never decide between a cheap banger and something decent tbh. Definately made the right decision though.

in my expience, i have always found BMW's to be more expensive to insure than many other similar performing cars.

maybe this can be attributed to higher theft risk and also RWD incidents?

a small engined focus/mondeo sized car would be my recommendation. a large car generally has more toys and also not as bad on the insurance as you would expect.
