in my expience, i have always found BMW's to be more expensive to insure than many other similar performing cars.

maybe this can be attributed to higher theft risk and also RWD incidents?

a small engined focus/mondeo sized car would be my recommendation. a large car generally has more toys and also not as bad on the insurance as you would expect.

Yes BMWs tend to be a lot more expensive to insure/always seem to have higher insurance groups. I assume it's because they are prone to higher theft/vandalism/RWD, but maybe also because replacement parts cost more?

To be honest, you can't go far wrong if you get a Focus. £5k should secure you a pretty clean one too. Will be a great first car.

Have you considered something like a Kia Sorrento.

Wild Card and a half, i like it good idea

cheap tax cheap insurance get one well under your budget.
