My friend bought a 2nd hand Seat Ibiza (09 model) around a month ago and has noticed issues with his 5th gear.

The rev counter is pretty good normally, 4th gear it's at about 200-2500rpm. As soon as he shifts up to 5th the car jolts and the rev counter hits 4000rpm instantly and gradually rises more. Iv'e seen it at 5000rpm myself at about 50mph to 60mph.

Its covered by warranty but does anyone know what the issue could be?

Ah ok so its definitely not slip then? Not concerned what the revs are normally in 4th more what it does under load.
Tbh the best thing for it is probably to get the codes pulled if that specific issue only happens in 5th....sounds a bit odd

Right,

pretty annoying for him considering it was bough less than a month ago. He is a new driver so at first didn't realise quite how bad it was.

Poor of the dealers to not have noticed this before selling to him IMO.

Are you saying the ACTUAL rpm is rising or just the needle?
i.e does it scream it's balls off when you engage 5th?

Because from how I read your OP it sounds like you are putting it in 3rd instead of fifth.. Comical if so :D

Well as I say there is a very noticeable jolt then going into 5th. It doesn't scream it's balls off so to speak but does get noticeably louder.

Jolt as in your body moves forward / car slows down rapidly for a second like you've jabbed the brakes?

It really does sound like you are describing him shifting into third rather than fifth.

Clutch slip would be the revs rising with no linear increase in acceleration. Also if it was clutch slip to the extent you are describing it would be stinking and smoking pretty quickly :p

Yeah as if the brakes were jabbed.

Lol I never even considered he could be sticking it into 3rd....that'd be an interesting one to take it back to the seller with

Hmmm, surely he isn't that much of a n00b, unfortunately he won't let me have a go to test it myself!

5* for this.

Keep us updated....

Perhaps you can ask him to press the clutch and you engage 5th from the left seat.

Just spoke to him, he is adamant that it is going into 5th properly. He has mentioned me engaging 5th from the passenger seat. Hopefully I can look tomorrow :D

Convince yourself that the gearstick is centering properly..that's the kind of thing that'd make it difficult for a new driver to engage 5th
