5TH gear and RPM issues.

You mock, but every time I drive the other half's car I attempt to make a new slot to the left of first to engage reverse....a dangerous thing to do in a French(ish),car.

I can just about manage 5th gear in either tho!

I tried to engage 6th in my friends 5 speed megane... Renault decided reverse lives there instead with no button or anything... Crunch.

If he is indeed shifting it into 3rd then it could be a work gear cable/linkage/whatever so that he feels like it's moving into 5th but is actually going into 3rd. But I wouldn't expect it on a 4 year old car (my 19 year old car perhaps but not a 4 year old).

5 gear in the Ibiza is sometimes hard to find for people who are new to driving. My sister has an Ibiza and did it a couple of times when she first had it.

That's where I was headed with the OP next, although he appeared to have sloped off, so I went back to bitcoin malarky with my laptop. :D :D

Been in the car today, I sat in the driver and played around with the clutch.

1st to 4th gear and even reverse feel normal, going into 5th it feels almost as if it slips slightly and when in 5th there seems to be a bit of play in the gear, you can wobble the gear stick more freely than in other gears.

I have an 09 Golf GTI with manual gearbox. It's 6 gears rather than 5 but probably similar to the Ibiza in construction and it goes into all gears smoothly although I just tried it and significantly there is a little bit more play when in 5th than in lower gears.

Get him to drive at say 50mph.then chuck it into 3rd.
Repeat but chuck it into 5th.

See if it had the same reaction.

Before we all jump on the clutch bandwagon, you say the revs are going up, but is any throttle being applied when the revs go up??

threads like this make me laugh. Surely a car is one of the few things in this world that you can operate and know absolutely nothing about how it works. (talking machinery that can kill you)
Being a mechanic i've heard just about every possible description of problems and to be honest most of them I just ignore. Want to find out whats wrong, take it to a garage, get them to drive it round the block, 99% of the time that'll be enough to figure out whats wrong.

The car is at the same speed going into 5th as it is in 4th and there will be a slight speed increase obviously. The thing is it is a vicious jump to 4000rpm from 2000-2500rpm.

Yeah Iv'e told him to phone the garage, just thought it would be nice to get some opinions here :)

When this happens, what speed is the car going when you're at 2000RPM? And what speed is the car going when it jumps to 4000RPM? Assuming everything is ok with your clutch, and you haven't changed gear, the speed at 4000RPM should be double the speed at 2000RPM.
