6 pin pci-e extension - wrong pins?

I am running an ATI 6970 that takes an 8 pin and a 6 pin pci-e power plug. My psu has 2 x (6+2) plugs which worked a treat. As part of a project I decided to get some Bitfenix cable extensions, among which was 1x 8pin pci-e and 1x 6pin pci-e. But the layout of the 6 pin doesn't fit the card - it's the wrong 6 out of the 8:

The bottom middle pins don't match? Is there something I'm missing?

Hi,

I have seen this before in another thread (but struggling to find it) I am new to this role so my first thought would be to return it.

Or if you can wait I will find out more info for you and possibly a better solution on Monday.

I just bought a coloured connector that was wrong just like yours. I just used a sharp knife to slice a bit of the material on the middle position and got it to fit. It is quite tight but it fits. There are two types of connector in use for the 6 pinners and you can but both types of connector but I'm not sure if the extensions have two versions.

Cheers guys - funny the things they change! I'll just go ghetto on it - slice and dice! (I always find a bit of blood improves the overall stability of a newly build system) :p

I've had another look at it Stulid and I just can't see how I could get a knife in there to reshape the pins so I am going to have to return it. I need a couple of other bits and bobs so if possible I'd like to just re-order and then pick up a credit when I get this back to you guys. Do you want me to go through the shop to set up the RMA?

Also, can you confirm that if I order another Bitfenix 6 pin it will be the correct one? (not another one like this one) :p

You should go through the shop for your RMA:)

I have asked 5UB to take a look at this thread so maybe he can assist better than I can especially in regards to getting a cable that is correct.

You did realise the advice was to cut/manipulate the plastic so it would fit the shape not bodge the pin around?

Would have thought it easy with a small screwdriver or a stanly blade to save the return hassle etc?

Thanks Stulid - I'll do just that

Unfortunately it's no simple task to cut the plastic as it is right in the middle of the pin, so surrounded by the other plastic pins on all sides:

Funnily enough the picture actually shows the correct pin configuration :)

Are you sure they are pcie extensions and not and 8 pin eps ? I have had the same problem when I rushed an order before.

Yep - definitely the 6 pin pci-e, it does indeed appear that there was a different revision at some stage

Have you posted in the CS section already?

All done thanks - RMA sorted - will be in the post tomorrow - love how easy it is with OcUK! :D

OMGWTFBBQ!

I have just received my replacement 6 pin pci-e 45cm extension cable - and it's the same as the last one!

What's going on guys - the one in the picture looks right to me - if you look at the middle pin closest to the clip that secures it to the GPU you can just make out that it is an irregular hexagon, NOT a square. Is this still a revision problem? I thought we had identified the issue?

Edit: Just had a little play and the picture (above) for the product is of the correct product - ie, only 2 square pins - but the one you guys are stocking is incorrect - ie. 3 square pins

Oh dear cavemanoc, I hope this has been sorted. I have been away at iSeries so catching up with everything. Please send me an email in trust if still not sorted out. - However by now Stulid is probably on the case. :)
