Not been on these forums in a lonnnnnnnnnng time. Looking to replace my 4790k w/ 1080ti.

I'm thinking I am going to keep the 1080ti as the 2080ti doesn't seem worth the money with new cards on the horizon. I am mainly using my PC for gaming (first person shooters - Escape from tarkov) and web development. From time to time I make some videos for YouTube but in general video editing isn't a priority.

Quite liking the look of AMDs CPU offering, so this is my build idea - thought's or improvements welcomed. I heard AMD CPUs appreciate fast RAM though I will admit I have no idea what the best buy is. I need something low profile if I want to use the D15.

Why air? I've nothing against AIO's, I just think aircoolers look nice and I like how quiet a build can be on one.

I can go up to £2 - 2.5K. Though I am thinkin of holding on until I see the new GPU offerings.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,488.00 (includes shipping: £14.10)

Hi

If your main aim is gaming you could easily drop down to a 3700X. You would still have the option of a Ryzen 4000 later on.

A cheaper cooler such as the Alpenfohn Brocken 3 for 40 quid would be fine as well with the 3700X. The Scythe coolers are also well regarded, but all out of stock at the minute. You also have the Arctic Freezer 34 esports duo for £35 which is really good value, but again out of stock like lots of stuff.

I would go with the X570 Tomahawk wifi at that price point if you can wait a couple of weeks (ETA June 3rd). It just smashes every other board out of the park at the £200ish price point. Or wait for B550 on the 16th June.

You would be fine with the 650W version of the SuperFlower psu.

That Ram is a bit pricey. I would suggest the Patriot Viper Steel 3200MHz CL16 32GB kit for £149.99 but it is out of stock at the minute.

Hi @lee32uk

Thank you for the recommendations. I assume dropping in a 4000 series cpu will be fine - no new mobo needed, when they drop?

Good shout on the mobo. Does 3600 to 3200 make much difference on RAM? I’ll take note on the other components you suggest too.

excited to see what GPUs land by the end of the year. I hope AMD bring something high end to the table!

If you do end up getting a Ryzen 4000 series CPU you'll have no issues sticking it straight in an X570 board...

As for RAM speeds it will be minimal difference from 3200mhz and 3600mhz so save the £££ there :)

Looking to replace my 4790k w/ 1080ti.

Check back in 3 weeks. This is because AND will be releasing their B550 motherboards (which will support PCIe v4) and Intel will be releasing their budget LGA 1200 boards (which won't initially and may or may not eventually). Both ranges are expected to support one CPU upgrade before the shift to DDR5. For AMD I really don't see the point of X570.

Intel CPUs are now price-competitive with AMD at the 6 & 8 core price points and perform better in games whereas AMD's CPUs perform better in productivity applications. We'll have to wait for Intel's low-end motherboards before coming to a platform decision, though I will note that the Intel 6 core 10400 comes with Intel's standard dreadful cooler whereas the Ryzen cooler is entirely adequate.

For AMD it does.

What do you have right now? What is the resolution of your monitor? You might consider reserving £1000 - £1500 for a monitor + GPU combo purchase in August / September.

Thanks, so it’s worth waiting for b550? I currently have the 27” Rog swift 1440p 165hz screen which is I’m loving. So I feel like all I really want is a top end GPU later in the year.

Absolutely. And the Intel alternative.

Very nice. I'm sure you'll be after a 3080 ti then. I would set aside £1000 for that and - hopefully - be pleasantly surprised when it's much less.

Less!? I was thinking, given the prices of the 2080ti that it would be more. Are they really likely to bring them to market less then 1k?

I do hope so. The thing is Nvidia now has a competitor in AMD. And Sony and Microsoft by proxy. Both the latter will be selling a complete 4K gaming system in November or December for around £500 so it's going to be very hard for Nvidia to justfiy £1,000 for just a GPU.

Both X570 and B550 support Ryzen 4000. There is also support on B450 but not every board will be compatible as it is up to the board vendors.

Not a big difference between 3200 and 3600 see link above. They only show 3600 CL16 though so the Corsair kit would be slower as it is 3600 CL18.

There is supposed to be an Nvidia killer from AMD called Big Navi but we will have to wait and see. It would be nice to get some competition at the top end.
