hi,
i'm building a gaming rig for a mate and wanted a few opinions before buying it which will be tonight/tomorrow. hes after a c2d setup similar to mine or better (i cheaped out and am running a p5b/e4300 @ 2.7ghz/2gb ddr2/8800gts 640mb) with a £600 budget, that will handle 1600x1200 with AA/AF on, in fps/rts games like stalker/c&c3 etc.
heres the list of parts that we're after:
-c2d processor and decent clockable motherboard, after seeing what mine can do, he'd like one that can at least get to what mine does so 2.7ghz is a target, board needs to have some sort of multi-channel sound output, but i guess most have anyway, not concerned about lack of firewire/wireless.
-2gb ram, not even going to consider anything less than that.
-8800gts 640mb, not going for ati at all, after reading the specs of the new ati card and how its not all that better than a 8800 but at a greater cost.
-300/320gb sata hdd, the criteria for the hdd is: storage space-->performance-->noise.
-psu that will run the above, i have a fsp blue storm 500w and its running my system fine and its pretty much what i've outlined above, doesnt have to be modular or any of that fancyness, just needs to have a PCIe/sata connectors etc.
-case with decent cooling, a black mini-tower possibly as it will be holding 1xdvdrw and 1xsata hdd at most. 120mm fan mounts would be good. any point in going for steel over an alu case?
..we wont need monitor/keyb/mouse/optical drives as hes going to recycle them from his current rig. overall he'd rather go for speed over noise (to a certain extend of course) and function over looks, so dont need a case with shiny blue lights and side windows, would rather go for a understated plain black jobbie that gets the job done.
i think thats everything, not bothered about soundcards too much these days, been running onboard sound for my machine for a while and tbh i cant notice the difference.
will most likely be running XP as its mainly for gaming but i suppose we'll have to go vista when more dx10 games are commonplace.
spec me, please.
