Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-075-WD)

is that a good drive, anyone know? it's 500gb at 7,200rpm sata 2

in short yes

Verdict: High capacity, good performance and affordable. The Caviar is a great alternative to the Samsung

As Western Digital's highest performance mainstream disk, the new Caviar SE16 is aimed at those wanting higher capacity than the Raptor X provides, but without sacrificing too much speed.

Inside the black casing, there are four 100GB platters and eight read/write heads. A 16MB buffer is welcome but, as Samsung proves, not a necessity for great transfer rates. Formatted capacity is a spacious 373GB.

The only tickbox unchecked is NCQ (native command queuing), part of the SATA/300 specification that reorganises incoming disk access commands into the most efficient order. But a glance at our benchmark results shows the absence of NCQ doesn't have a detrimental effect for general file copying or intensive applications such as Photoshop CS2.

With the Caviar hooked up to our test rig, our CS2 benchmark took 5 mins, 15 secs. This meant that only the Samsung and Raptor X helped Photoshop run faster. Although the difference between the fastest and slowest disk was less than half a minute, it shows that the hard disk can be a big factor in a PC's day-to-day speed.

Running HD Tach RW, we found the SE16 came fairly close to its claimed seek time of 8.9ms - 9.03ms to be precise. This was quicker than the Samsung, but when it came to sustained transfer rates the Caviar couldn't keep up with the SpinPoint. It managed a respectable 57MB/sec even though its platters don't hold as much data as the Samsung's (which returned 61MB/sec on average). The Western Digital was likewise close behind in the large file-copy tests, with an average read speed of 60.6MB/sec and a write speed of 56.7MB/sec.

Unlike the Maxtor - which struggled with very small files - the Caviar again almost kept up with the Samsung, reading at 19.4MB/sec and writing at 12.9MB/sec. As the other 7,200rpm disks could manage only around 7MB/sec for writing small files, this is impressive stuff.

Idle and seek noise was virtually identical to the quiet Samsung at 36dBA and 38dBA respectively. Even when working hard, though, the Caviar didn't become hotter than disks with fewer platters, measuring 37C.

If you need more than 250GB in a single disk, the Caviar SE16 is a great alternative to the Samsung. At 29p per gigabyte, it isn't quite as good value, but it's faster than the bigger Maxtor and slightly cheaper per gigabyte.

also consider the samsung spinpoint S they are talking about here. i just recommended the WD drive as ive had 3 of them and not had a problem with any of them unlike some other makes of HD ive had (seagate)

Mobo has onboard gfx.

Motherboard won't work with that CPU or that ram, you would ahve to change it to a single core CPU and DDR ram. In which case you may as well get an AMD.

Samsung are excellent drives, fast, reliable and quiet (I have one btw ;))

To be honest... if he's just starting out he could get away with 1GB RAM. I do a lot of photography and editing of them (in RAW so they're fairly mammoth images) and I've only got 512mb RAM and it holds up fine. With photography you probably find you're just tweaking contrast, colour balance, levels etc... and not faffing too much with layers and so it doesn't require as much RAM for storage of all the different bits.
If I was you I'd pop into a retail shop and LOOK at the monitors to see what the image looks like, some monitors tend to look washed out... and then buy from somewhere cheaper online (e.g. OcUk :))

I'd recommend a similar job with cameras... go in and actually try them out, any half decent camera shop should let you have a play with it before you invest nearly a grand in a camera. I've personally got a Nikon D70 which I bought over a year ago and I love it. Nikon's have the advantage that their mounts for the lenses haven't changed so they're easy to find cheap lenses for... I also prefer the colour reproduction and feel of the camera. Again, a lot of it's down to personal choice. Either way, if you spend a lot on a DLSR you'll be getting a meaty camera :D

Thanks guys, I think i'll revert back to just getting the 1GB of ram for him then, as he isn't too good with computers anyway and by the time he get good at photoshop he can always wop some more ram in then.

I'll get a samsung or WD drive.

As for graphics ive got a ATI Radeon 9600 or something in an older PC, shall I just steal that for him?

He's told me he's tried the canon eos 350d in a shop and wants it, so i guess he'll get it.

yes nick the old radeon

come to it, even a £10 computer fair job would do. even a radeon 8500 can manage 1600 x 1200 at 100hz given the right monitor

IS that ok then? Will it all work together in harmony or is there a non compatible component in there somewhere? Gonna stay with the 2GB of ram i think, lol cant make my mind up.

Thanks again guys.
