Building a PC for a friend (solely for gaming), 600 quid so i thought i'll go for an AMD build to save money, not 100% on what motherboard so i was wondering if someone could offer some advice. He can take advantage of any weekly offers as he'll be buying this week, thanks.

thanks but, he's pretty set on having window 7 and spending a limit of 600 though

Fair comment bud but using the evaluation of Windows 8 does make sense as a stop gap. He can add the start bar back with a software addon.

There is no optical drive or PSU in your spec are they needed? Adding a mobo will put you over £600. If I was asked to do a build for around £600......

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £175.99
1 x MSI HD 7850 OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards £149.99
1 x Asus P8Z77-V LX2 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £76.99
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 500w Modular '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020059-UK) £54.98
1 x Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C9 2000MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A2000C9) £53.99
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 1TB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA100) HDD £47.99
1 x Xigmatek Asgard Pro Gaming Case - Black £32.99
Total : £607.02 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Yes someone will say get the Z77-D3H etc etc but I'm trying to balance it as close to £600 as possible

solid build that, nice one. I've got d3h, it's top, but yeah, he needs to stay in that price range.
i should be able to persuade him on window 7 part. I've never built a pc without using the traditional throw the disk in way. Would it be a case of loading it onto a usb then plugging it?
also is the correct windows 8 you mean? http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-GB/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx

Thank you, I have my moments ;)

Let your buddy know that Intel has a new socket out next month and Nvidia may well be dropping some updated GPUs by the end of this month. He might want to wait and save some more pennies.

Yes that's the evaluation edition you linked. You could burn it to disk and lend him your optical drive briefly for the install. You can do it via USB stick but the pendrive has to be formatted to be bootable. There is a software tool to inject the iso and do all this for you. I can't recall the name of it off hand, either google or maybe another (sober) forum member can point you to it ;)

You may have even helped me spec my pc last year yano! completely forgot about the drive, schoolboy error. I don't know if haswell will effect the price of cpu's too much but the new gpu's should. I have a word with him and if not i'll just burn it to disk and build, sounds easier

It's possible. Although I can't remember what I had for breakfast let alone who I spec'd last year lol

I thinks it's always best just to give people the info. He might not be bothered about Haswell but better you tell him than he buys into socket 1155 then complains once 1150 drops in June.....if you catch my drift :)

My mates ordered the parts, they should be here by wednesday

Try disconnecting the Gpu and connect monitor to the mobo. Still no luck try with one stick of ram. If you have a spare or access to another Psu, try this also.
Sorry I don`t have a specific answer, but these things usually come down to the process of illimination.
