I'm stuck on 60fps on Skyrim. Tried no aa no af filtering, everything on low settings at 1280x720.. same on 1440p

Whats up with that?

Are you using anything like Afterburner with V-Sync on? I suspect an AMD owner would be able to help more as I am unfamilliar with AMD drivers as it has been so long since I owned one.

Leave it on. The bethesda games are hard programed to run at 60 fps,a higher frame rate the game will become a mess. Trust me i know as i was looking to max frame rate out on fallout.

To much hassle and will 99% of the time run like carp.

I was going to suggest that. Why do you want it to run at more than 60fps? Are you using a 120hz monitor?

Why because at certain points the frame rates drop to like 20fps.

While Vsync is on do the FPS stay at 60fps always? The game loads at 60FPS but while playing it fluctuates and drops really low and back up causing 'stuttering?' so i'd like the fps to be as high as possible. Or does this not sound like vsync?

V-Sync will just limit the maximum frame rate, prevent screen tearing and on some setups it means a much smoother experience, it will not however have any effect on the minimum frame rate, if its hitting 20fps having v-sync on or off will make no difference.

Ok, so how would you explain a 7970 getting 20fps at 1280x720 on low settings?

No idea I am afraid. Makes no sense, I would be tempted to uninstall the drivers and start again. I know skyrim is buggy, I've had to remove it because it won't even load for me.

You shouldn't need to turn off high res textures, your system should be able to handle it easily especially at that resolution! Theres something not right.

Can you run some benchmarks (3d mark 2011) to see how you system competes with other similar spec systems out there? .If you get a score that's much lower to any other similar setups it means that there is something wrong with the card. If the scores are similar it might mean that there is something wrong with the drivers for playing Skyrim. Can you also check the clock speeds of you card? dont suppose it managed to underclock itself somehow?

I ran 3dmark 11 and FPS on performance at 1440p is giving me 13fps on first test (after demo). On completing that test and starting the second 3dmark would crash with an error.

During the 3dmark test and Skyrim GPUZ and CCC would show the core clock staying at 500mhz and wouldnt go higher even though 'Activity' is around 100%...
