60Gb SSD getting full

On 31st October last year I bought a Titan Spinosaur PC from Overclockers which came with a 60Gb SSD and a 1Tb HDD. I chose to ask Overclockers to put Windows 7 on the SSD and I use the 1Tb HDD for everything else.

The snag is that Windows updates itself, plus a number of programmes although installed to the 1Tb drive, also stick some of their data files on the SSD also by default.

As a consequence, I am now running out of space on my SSD - I now have only 5.47Gb free space on it! I have been through all the folders and removed what I thought was crap but I would like to upgrade to Windows 8 at some point and think thats a no-no at this point.

So my question is what are my options? I dont have the original Windows 7 CD and given the chance I'd like to get a larger SSD instead - I really though 60Gb would be enough back then.
Is there somewhere that lists what chunky files can be removed instead?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks guys. I'll check out all those things. @ dariel I had CCleaner installed on an old PC and I think its one of those progs that can be dangerous in the hands of a numpty like me - or perhaps I should say its useless in my hands because Im too scared to accidentally delete something lol. Nevertheless I'll check it out.

Not sure if I got a serial key. I guess I should have done. I'll pull the PC out and take a look see if its on the case.

CCleaner shouldn't delete anything major. You could probably get away with selecting all the boxes in the standard CCleaner. But with CCEnhancer, you should really take the time to go through each of the many options.

Atfcleaner will delete any temp files etc that are just sitting around doing not a fat lot.

Running the cmd dism /online /cleanup-image /spsuperseded will also nuke any sp files hanging around.

Reduce the size of your system restore allocation might help too.

I'm in a similar situation, I really thought my 64Gb drive would be sufficient. Its annoying how much space gets chewed up even when you install everything else on a seperate drive. I'm about to upgrade to Win8 and kinda tempted to get a bigger drive at the same time, I guess I can clear stuff up but its a pain to have to keepm doing that.

I find 60GB fine (have 60GB M4 SSD for OS and 120GB for games) with about 15-20GB free space.

Thanks for the heads up on the CCEnhance btw.

1. The problem is that I see Win8 needs 20Gb free space. I'm presuming that is required during install as it copies and overwrites the Win7 files. In which case I cant upgrade without some serious deleting, which Im a bit cautious of doing.

2. I wonder really how much difference the SSD is making. I have my 1Tb SATA drive going mostly vacant so if I stuck the OS on there would it seriously slow me down?

@ Duke; I have no idea how you have got so much space left over! What's your secret?

have you disabled hiberfile.sys that will waste some ssd space and if you don't have a laptop it's kinda pointless

Nope - thanks I'll do that & see how it goes. I sent a webmail to OCUK a minute ago asking whether its possible to return the PC to get a 120Gb drive put in and Win8 installed. The PC is still under warranty I felt it best to ask that first before I start replacing the SSD myself. Other than this...even including this...its a brilliant PC though.

Many of the the SSD manufacturers (Kingston or Samsung definitely) have a "notebook" kit version of their SSD for a few £ more which comes with software to clone your old drive to the new one.

Depends how much you have installed really but Windows 7 should only be about 20GB if I remember correctly and maybe another 10-20GB for applications?

How much free space is there now after the cleaning?

Just wanted to post an update as a thanks for the great help:

I started off with 5.72Gb free space
I then switched off "hibernate" which resulted in 11.7Gb free space
I then tried to remove the Service Pack back-up files but the good guys at OCUK must have done that when they set it up
I then deleted C:\Nvidia which resulted in 12.1Gb free space
Finally I installed ccleaner and cenhancer, ran ccleaner (but I wasnt happy with it wanting to remove key programmes - I thought it was being a bit drastic), which means I now have 17.1Gb free space.

Thats a pretty massive difference!

Another update:

I adjusted the virtual memory on my SSD to be from 512 min to 1024 max and then told it to automatically manage the virtual memory on my 1Tb drive.

I also reduced the system restore to around 4%

23.9Gb free space now! :)

Ccleaner doesn't remove the programs, just their temp files (in the main window).

Personally, I just disable system restore.
