Hello gents.

It's my old mans 60th this December. He used to be thoroughly into PC gaming circa 2008 where he played with me online in communities. He lost interest in PC gaming once the Call of Duty PC community phase died (Enemydown, Clanbase, Eurodomination etc) and I suppose when I became a MMO fiend and went to consoles.

With that in mind I'm going to get him setup on a PC again - Mainly so he can play the stupidly long list of RTS' and other PC games he's missed at a ridiculous level. Initially he will be at 1080p however he likely plans to go to an Ultrawide or at least a 1440p.

I've recently upgraded and kept some spare parts around. Looking to spend £1,400 (ish) on the rest leaving about £100 left for games / whatever my siblings throw in.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,148.86 (includes shipping: £0.00)

The above is my first stab. To note I own the CPU, Motherboad and PSU already. So exclude the cost. The case I am looking to use is my old HAF X. Little beat up as it was my lan machine however this is going to go under his desk and never be looked at.

I'm planning to buy the machine during Black Friday so hoping to get 10% off so the parts will likely change to whatever is on offer but of a similar spec.

Any advice / tips welcome.

Looks good, what about a second hand 1080 ti over a 2080 to save some money.
I was looking at a 1080ti (new) as the performance difference is reported ~5% and in many cases lower than the ti. Not convinced the new tech will be used in the main type of games he's looking at for a long time.

Do you really need a blu ray drive ? I would also go 1080ti second hand whilst you can get them. Mine was for £447. Bargain.

Sell the i5/motherboard and get an 8 core Ryzen ? It will last a lot longer than that 4 core 4 thread i5.

No Windows included but you can get a product key much cheaper. I wouldn't pay £100+ for it.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,476.98 (includes shipping: £11.10)

I'm going to drop the Blu Ray drive and look at getting Windows somewhere else. Should help the overall cost. Not sold on the used 1080ti. If a decent Black Friday deal hits then getting one new would be nicer. Although he may look to stay at 1080p so I may downgrade to a 1080 / 1070 anyway.

drop the bluray as others have mentioned and drop graphics to a 1060 maybe 1070, if he stays at 1080p then no point wasting the extra money, instead get a nice g-sync monitor to go with the gpu... while lee is right about lasting longer, if the system doesnt end up needing more than 4 cored then its another waste, so do as you was and stick with the i5 until yiu feel the need to upgrade.

Yeah. I shall speak to the old man about it and what Resolution he expects to play at.

I have managed to reduce the cost to ~ £800 by dropping the M.2 memory, Blu-ray, Windows, using an old Noctua air cooler, using a 1080, and a smaller 1TB harddrive.

This will let me buy a monitor / new chair / more games.
