Naa, I was hoping for something that says Wii costs £30 to make, so therefore has the same mark up as food or something.
They're making no more mark up than the flashy LCD and Plasma TVs that everyone wants (and yet doesnt complain about) probably less mark up than a PC graphics card

Nintendo Wii: profit of $92 per unit, from Kotaku
The Wii has been cracked open, its entrails spilled, its blood consumed and its organs dissected, categorised and sold off to the highest bidder. The market value for each is as follows:

Graphics chip: $29.60
CPU: $13.00
DRAM: $7.80
Optical disk drive: $31.00
Power supply: $11.30
Manufacturing cost: $19.50
Cost total: $158.30

That of course doesn't take into account cost of:

Wii remote
Nunchuck
AV cable
Power cable
Sensor Bar
Packaging
Shipping
(Inclusion of Wii Sports?)

But of course it highlights there's a good profit made from each console.

And even then I don't understand why people are slagging Nintendo off for making a profit?

And so there needs to be, the prices quoted for parts are only if Nintendo can take the risk and order millions at once, then they need to pay staff / keep share holders happy. Its a well run gaming business.
Microsoft and Sony can afford to go into debt and prop up their companies from other areas, in which case those two must be ripping off the consumer in other ares?

Nor do I, particularly. Although I have to say I was a little disappointed with the above £149.99 price point. Didn't stop me buying a launch model, so I suppose it is worth what you're willing to pay.

It's not for us to say if MS or Sony rip people off in other areas. They just aren't as well oiled as Nintendo are with consoles. MS now make a profit, I think, on the 360. Whether it stays that way (ie: they make a profit when production ends considering all the consoles they didn't make a profit on/were sent back/repaired) remains to be seen.

Rhys, have you ever been to Japan?
tip: dont judge Nintendo and the Wii just by western habbits and culture.

No Ive not been to Japan. Unfortunately.
I dont know what you mean by your comment? Are you saying that it will be successful in Japan therefore deemed a successful product? We all know Japan isnt the same as the rest of the world and so should be treated differently when analysing stuff.

01.07.08 = set a reminder to read this thread then and lets see if the Wii has sold 20 million units or what the games sold per console is? Does anyone have the figures for the Wii game that has sold the most?

Well, I think for the price it's lot of fun. For me it's brought back what console gaming is all about. Get some mates round, add a pinch of beer, some grub and off you go. It still has a couple of brilliant single player games too, Zelda is absolutely brilliant. RE4 is great too, and if the graphics from that are even slightly bettered I'll be a happy man.

Looking forward to Metroid and Mario too. Mario Kart online? Great stuff! Though I must admit I have been put off online gaming by the 360. It's great in theory, but the people ruin it for me. Oh, the irony ;) Of course I'll give it a go on the Wii and see what happens.

Hopefully the Wii will now be backed to the hilt by all the big software houses and we will see some really cracking use of the Wiimote. Speaking of which, I think the controls are superb in Resi4 though I never played it on the cube.

I think another problem round here is that this is, after all, a forum full of hardware geeks. We all know whats in the 'box' and can usually criticise it with a bit of knowledge. And in the PC market, more expensive is usually more advanced with better graphics etc. I think that attitiude overuns into the console forum a touch, when it really shouldn't.

Oh, do I have to.

I have nothing against the Wii, nothing. (Well apart from it's extortionate price). It's fun and has introduced whole stara of society to gaming.

For me next gen is represented by the jump to HD. HD-DVD, HD-TV, HD-Consoles, Sky HD; the Wii for me is a last gen console with a new control scheme.

They're competing in different markets. Games are made for PS2 / PSP and Wii atm or 360 / PS3. The publishers and developers have made the distinction I don't know why we find it that hard.

PS. I have a DS-Lite and I'll get a Wii once it's below £100.

I've been playing HD-games on my PC for the last 8 years or so. What is so new about that.
Besides which I don't have an HD-TV and will not likely own one for the next 5 years or more at least. So how exactly does the PS3 and XBOX360 make it as next gen.
You just play the same game in the same way but with the resolution that PC games have enjoyed for the best part of a decade.

With the Wii my gaming has fundamentally changed for the better. It is the biggest leap in Console technology since we moved from 2D to 3D. In this sense the Wii is the only real nextGen console as it is the only one that has a major paradigm shift in the types of games available.

This place is quite funny, Nintendo get dissed for being a great company (i.e. make shedloads of money, and have popular products)
MS's HED division gets slated for being a very bad company (Posting loss, year after year)

I know what one i'd rather have shares in :)

IMO the Wii is a bit over priced, mainly due to all the peripherals you have to buy. If the Wii came with 2 remotes, 2 nunchucks and a classic controller in the box, i honestly would say it is a bargain. But what annoys me from a consumer POV if i buy a Wii at 180 then need to spend almost another 100 on remote, nunchuck and classic controller, to get any benefit from it. Because, as has been said on here many many times, the Wii if for multiplayer in the same room.

another reason the Wii along with the Ds is doing so well and thats tv
marketing. For example this morning on kids TV the amount of Wii and DS adverts is astonishing!, and this is everyday. Then they sponser Tv shows also. The advertising campaign certainly helps i think and they certainly have more adverts than Ms or sony

The PS2 had an insane amount of advertising, I wonder why sony fell flat on its face when it came to advertising the PS3?

Could be, previous generations saw Nintendo put very little adverts out while MS and Sony spent billions. No OSny don't seem to be doing anything much while Nintendo really are pully out all the stops.

think one of their biggest marketing successes was sponsoring the C4 comedy shows, the big ones, that attract a massive adult viewer base. Advertise a 'toy'(all consoles are toys really. thats just my view) that looks fun and a laugh to use, during a show, that people watch because its a laugh, and is fun..

But also was a very clever marketing campaign.

For those people that watch those shows, they aren't the more 'younger' generation who are out on the town and thus never see the adverts.

I know loads of people (me included) where I'll go round to a friends house on a Friday night for a few beers, pizza, watch Peep Show or similar. Wouldn't it be great if we had a Wii to play with too after those shows have ended!

Voila!!

Partially correct, i avoid fri+sat nights out usually because its cheaper going out other nights of the week being a student :) So they get the student audience too, peep show, 8out of 10cats and friday night project are much watches for us.

I agree with this completely - just a tad too expensive for what it is - and the games are too. Even £150/£30 would be a better price point for what you are getting - The PS3 is expensive but I already have around 50 BR's and I watch something nearly every night and this is why its worth nearly twice as much to me compared to the wii

Im not knocking Nintendo's offering at all, good for them, its just not for me until there is a bit more choice and hopefully a little cheaper (Im also more interested in GC /N64 games which at £7 or so is wayyyy too much for a d/l imo)

Expensive games? I think they are a bargain. Even Mario strikers was easy to find for £25 at launch. Most games can easily be found for around that mark. I've been looking for Mario Party 8 and a quick search finds it for 25 then quidco.

Naturally going into highstreet stores does you no favours but then there is a reason you only see kids in those stores handing over money.

Get em off auction for £6.50 then ;)

How much did your Blu-ray discs cost £25 for 2 hours? youll watch the movie what 3 times maybe because it looks stunning? and does Blu-ray make the story any better?

compared to £25 for Wii games for at least 10-20 hours, Ive put £20 into 1 arcade machine before now and didnt even get to keep the machine :(

Wow, 25 Blu-ray discs at £25 each totals £1250...
