6200?

I am looking to buy a new graphics card, the 6200 is catching my eye as the only game i play is counter-strike, but i would like a card capable of playing half-life 2 to the max (just in case i decide to get into this game), which i don't think this card would quite be able to do.

I have been looking on ebay for a month now to try and pick up a cheap ati 9800 but the lowest i have seen one go for is £40 which i do not really want to pay for a card which could go wrong at any minute without the backup of a manufacturers warranty.

Does anyone have any recomendations or advice on what card i should go for?

Considering i do not want to spend that much as i only play counter-strike and i am a poor student

You considered a 9600xt 256mb?

ATi always seem to tip nvidia on framerates in Half life 2!

While building a budget pc for a mate i managed to pick one of these up off ebay for £40 delivered. It was sat in a celeron 2.5ghz machine with 1gb ram and XPpro. It happily played half life 2 at 1280 by 1024 with little to no lag!

Indeed, it wasn't embarrasingly far off my girlfriends machine with a 3ghz athlon xp, 2gb ddr (dual channel) and a 6800 ultra!

How much can you get an fx5900 for? That'd beat the 6200 you're lookin at surely! It would definately be closer to the 9800 in performance terms!

Well

I have been looking at the 9600, my brother uses this graphics card which runs superbly on his computer.
I have a similar spec computer to that of the one you stated you set up for someone. 5900XT i don't think you can buy 1st hand anymore, they are rare on ebay, but when someone is selling one it usually sells for around £50.
I would ideally like one of these but i don't really want to spend that much on a second hand card.

Do you know if a 9600 would give maximum fps on half-life 2?

Cheers

I actually have a spare 9600xt at home but not a pc to put it in - if you can wait til monday i'll get it into work and put it on that pc (3.2ghz ht p4 with 1gb ram) bench it up and tell you what i find!

That's the best i can do!

Incidentally - there's a 5900 on the auction site you mentioned earlier. It's not first hand but it looks in good nick and the person selling it has all the manuals, cables and software to go with it! Is pretty cheap too with only 6 hours to go!

Had a think and you may like to consider a 9700pro. Not far off a 9800 and is 256bit too! Would eat up hl2 far better than a 9600 and is probably a lil cheaper than a 9800!

cheers for the input

I'll have a look now, so many cards to choose from but i have a good idea of what i want now.

It's ok you don't need to go to that trouble to find out benchmarks, could find them off the net.

9700's were not as popular as the 9600 series, don't suppose you would know why this is, is it because the 9800 was released not long after?

DO YOU GET A 6200, ITS SLOW AND NOT UPTO THE JOB OF GAMING UNLESS YOU LIKE PLAYING GAMES AT 800X600.

Your best bet is a 9800pro. My 9800Pro fried itself, and I had a 6200 on loan ;)from a highstreet shop until my 6800GS came, and other than using it from MCE 2005, games on it were so so slow it painfull I just did not bother.

I know what you mean but don't really understand why they weren't that popular. Could well be because the 9800 was released after like you say!

Despite that the 9700 was very highly regarded and well reviewed! It's 256bit memory interface beats the 9600's 128bit plus it has 8 pixel pipelines versus the 9600xt's 4 pipelines!

Infact, it's so similar to a 9800 you'd be pushed telling the difference!

There are a few on the bay too!
