6300/6400 or 6600 c2d

Thanks easyrider. ;)

Got this 6300 off one of the guys on the forum and was not even tested to see how high it goes as he had an Asrock mobo...does 3.5ghz no prob's.

Quoted from TechReport:

You'll find plenty of sources that will tell you the code name for these 2 MB Core 2 Duo processors is "Allendale," but Intel says otherwise. These CPUs are still code-named "Conroe," which makes sense since they're the same physical chips with half of their L2 cache disabled. Intel may well be cooking up a chip code-named Allendale with 2 MB of L2 cache natively, but this is not that chip.

Allendale 2mb cache
Conroe 4mb cache.
Kentsfield 8mb cache

While thats true, E6300 and E6400 are both still Conroe as they still do both have 4Mb cache and use exactly the same cores as Conroe, just 2Mb of the cache is disabled.

Intel have released a statement about 6300 and 6400 and they are both Conroes.

quoted for truth ;)

Apparently the latest CPU-Z (v1.38) is now listing the e6300 and e6400 as Conroe.

But they still only have 2mb cache.

And its splitting hairs now lol.

Just like a toledo was not a manchester even if it had the 1mb cache disabled.

I had a toledo with 512kb cache did i care?

No it clocked the better than the manchesters lol

lol i know it's being pedantic :D but hey-ho! either way all current c2d's are conroe it seems (Even reported by cpu-z :o) btw appologies to vocch for the incorrect name

No prob's mate. ;) .....Well i guess it's nice to know i still got a 2mb conroe. :D

how much benefit do you get out of the extra cache?

i'm looking to upgrade in january time (when all the prices will be different anyways) but this still might affect what i buy :p

Not a lot in real terms.

certainly not worth double the money.

Is the 6600 worth the extra 100 quid over the E6300? Particulary on a tight budget + No overclocking.

Because atm it's a tie-up between having the E600 + 1gb RAM or E6300 + 2gb RAM.

No overclocking because i don't actually have a clue what i'm doing, and the threads about it confuse me more with standard mobo speeds and stuff.

Also because right now i can't afford the extra money for decent cooling, and because on a tight budget i'm not risking causing damage to the parts. I would have a go if i knew what i was doing 100%.
