Basically I'm building a gaming PC and my budget for a CPU is about £150, so I chosee the Gigabyte 970A-DS3 but which processor should I go for, I was thinking:

AMD Bulldozer FX-4 Quad Core 4170 Black Edition 4.20Ghz

or

AMD Piledriver FX-6 Six Core 6300 3.50GHz

but I don't really know, any CPU and Motherboard that would be compatible with MSI HD 7870, Cooler Master Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black and 8GB of DDR3 would be fine.

Suggestions?

The Piledriver FX-6300 <- £100.... good price! Is a much better CPU.

This is a much better case for £10 more than your Elite 430

Given that the FX-6300 is only £100 and you say you have £150, can you push to £65 on the Motherboard?
This is a much better Board than the Gigabyte.

Will you be overclocking the CPU?

As for the 7870, good choice... :D

Ive got the ASRock 970 Extreme3 AMD 970 and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone as the vrms on the board are really prone to getting too hot.

My old asus 700 series board is still running and does a better job

Im fine with with the case. This motherboard I think I'll be OK with.

I'm going overclock in the future but not straight away

Do you mean the VRMs or the heatsinks are hot? The heatsinks getting hot is fine as that means they are working properly.

The VRMs overheat and cause cpu throttling, its a pretty common problem / issue with the motherboard.

And to the op i have a coolermaster 430 on another pc and its a pretty good case for the money, and i don't want to start another debate on which is best but if your going for a gaming pc what made you go with amd ? if your sticking with amd would you not be better getting the 8320 espicially as your budget would allow for it.

Then you will need an after market CPU cooler, about £20 to £30 will get you a decent one.

I have the 990fx extreme 3 and my vrms overheat and cause throttling as well.

Passey89, have you not thought about getting a better board as you allready know the asrock is not the best for getting any decent overclocks out of.

For example with my 8120 i could only achieve a stable 3.7 where as the same chip on my older cheaper asus m5a78l-m was fine running at 4.3

The 8320 is forty pound over budget

In your first post you said you had a budget for cpu of £150 or does that amount include the motherboard ?, if so and you want to stick with amd the 6300 is the better choice of the two
