Hey People

I see a lot of people have 6300's but not many ahve 6400's, nay reason for this. They are around £40 more expenisve and clocked a fare bit higher!!!

Also, have never clocked with ddr 2 memory, can some explain or point me in the direction of core 2 duo overclocking FAQ. Basically need to know with pc6400 memory how it works to attain the speed of the chip i.e. ratio's etc

Phil

6400's wont give you any higher clocks than 6300's hence why people buy them.

do a search there is loads of info about clocking conroes all dotted about.

someone told me that E6400 will go 3.2ghz easier than the e6300 because of an 8x multiplyer. Although i have no idea what it means so go for an e6300.

A DS3 mobo will do 450 FSB with ease.

so 7x 450 = 3.15ghz

You dont really need a 8x multi to get nice clocks.

The two sweet spots in the whole C2D range are the:

6300 (nice and cheap and will easily do 3ghz+ only has 2mb cache)

6600 ( 100 quid more will do 3.6 usually and has 4mb cache)

Only get a 6400 id you dont intend to clock. As its just 40 quid wasted when this could be put towards better ram faster gfx card etc.....

iv got an asus p5w dh deluxe. not sure how these conroes clock (i.e. fsb vs multi) as in ddr 1 days it used to be a case of higher multi's are better normally.

Bbut how well will this ram clock my board while keeping good timings

if i got a 6300 what results should i expect with that combo?

Phil

The 975x chipsets like the 4mb cache conroes.

If you can stretch the extra 100 I would get a 6600 and aim for 3.6ghz with that ram.

the 6300's clock well with the 965 chipsets like the DS3 and ASUS P5B.

My old Asus P5W DH maxed out at around 423 FSB.

Giving me a 24/7 overclock of 3.8ghz

7x423 on the 6300 will give you 2.96ghz

The P5B will do 500 FSB making it a better mobo fo the lower multi conroes 6300 etc.

Why have you bought the mobo before you decide on the chip?

becuase for £85 it was a bargain :p - so you cant blame me can you ;) ?

2.8/2.9Ghz would suit me fine, i had a amd san diego 400+ plus before at 2.8ghz and i was pleased with the erformance of that till i sold it all so a core 2 duo at 2.9Ghz will more than please me.

What is the stamdard fsb for a 6300 chip. Also when clock is it still with these chips a case of shoving up the fsb and adjusting the timings?

Phil

E6300 is 1.86GHz at stock - 7 x 266MHz.

My E6300 is now at 3.36GHz simply by turning up the FSB to 480MHz. Haven't messed with voltages/timings at all.

Not all Mobo/Ram combinations will allow this but 2.8-3GHz should be easily achievable.

Is that prime stable?

Wise words indeed !!

I had the same choice not so long ago & wen't for the 6300 & DS4 ,its sitting @ 3.4Ghz Orthos stable 486x7 using 1.35v

My 6300 got to 3.3 Ghz easily (Orthos stable), about 0.40volts above stock to get it stable, anything below 1.375 in the bios and Orthos will error.
I think the Rams holding me back now though, but hey I can't complain, PC5300 Value ram at 944 Mhz :D. I thought wouldn't get past 2.6 Ghz according to some article I read ^_^
Can push to 3.4 Ghz with this Ram but I think the vcore needs upping more again which I don't see much point in.

at the moment its £28 difference between the E6300 and E6400
and as i have changed boards from the £120 Asus P5Bdlx to the £75 Asus P5N-E i think i'm going to spend some of the saving on having the extra multiplier, just for the extra headroom to make sure there is only 1 bottleneck in the system :p

How become you went for the P5N from P5B Deluxe? Surely it's a step backwards?

That uses the promo chip right?

the P5N is the new nForce 650i motherboard that they've only just brought out :)

i'm still unsure of whether to get the E6300 or E6400

E6300, i might reach the boards FSB max before i reach the chips max

E6400, its £30 more but guaranteed that it'll be the chips max holding me back.
