at the mo im running a 64 3000 at stock on a crappy jetway mb. im gonna do a completly new system sometime nxt year but would like something extra to tide me over till then. i was thinking of : -

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego (Socket 939) - OEM

would i see much of an increase in power with something like this? i know its not going to be huge, but id just like my comp to be a bit more nippy.

i'd have thought that an u/g to dual core would be better? eg a 3800+ X2...
I'm pretty sure almost all S939 mobo's can take an X2, they just need a BIOS update as the A64 architecture was designed for dual core from the offset.

dont see much point in going dualcore just yet, i dont use any applications that are multi-threaded so i think it would be a bit of a waste.

He only want's a bit more oomph to tide him over until his new build. You should see some improvement but it's only 400mhz faster. There are some good deals to be found now for 3700+ cpu's making them a good buy at the mo. Does that Jetway have any overclocking possibilities at all? I suppose thats too much to hope for? The 3000+ should be a decent clocker.

I'd keep the 3000 and buy DFI LanParty UT RDX200CF-DR cross-fire and clock the hell out of it .This board was well over £100 when it first came out but is now £25 +vat this week only.A clocked 3000 well be faster than a stock 3700.Also when u upgrade in the future this board would make fine fill server as it has 2 marvell giga lan ports ,8 sata ,raid 5 and firewire.
