64 bit questions

I will likely be doing a big upgrade soon (hardware and software) and I am wondering if I should go for a 64 bit version of windows 7 when it comes out.

What I don't know is whether there are still any disadvantages to running a 64 bit os these days. I know there used to be compatibility problems but I would guess these have largely been ironed out now. If I do go for 64 bit I don't think i will have problems with drivers as i'll be running it on new hardware (but if i'm wrong please let me know).

Questions that spring to mind are these -

Will it run:

photoshop cs2
acrobat 8 pro
adobe go live
Steam
filezilla
blackberry desktop software

and loads of other programs.....

I can't think of all the other questions right now - but if someone could just point out any pitfalls they've come across I'd appreciate it a lot.

Cheers

The only application I've found that doesn't like 64bit during install is the BBC iPlayer, everything else works great.
(edit: I had to download a hacked version of the installer, the main iPlayer works fine with 64bit, it was just the terrible installer didn't like it.)

thanks for your replies. in light of what i've heard here i can't think of any reason why i would go for a 32 bit os again.

i didn't know that a 64 bit os would run 32 bit apps.

I can confirm it definitely runs:
photoshop cs2
acrobat 8 pro
Steam
filezilla

Not sure about the others. But yeah, I've only had problems with a few very obscure programs, you'll be fine!

Doesn't FFDSHOW + MKVSplitter support that (FFDSHOW is available in 64 bit)?

64-bit should run most 32-bit apps fine, usually most developers will have 64-bit versions of their software anyway. Most major companies such as ESET have 64-bit version's of their security software, I've been on 64-bit for about a year and a half now and I've yet to find an app I used not compatible under a 64-bit OS.

many thanks for the specifics on these programs. they are important ones for me.

quite fancy the idea of having a huge amount of ram installed :D

i had issues with cubase sx 3. Everything else i have had issues with i have got to work (mainly by running in xp compatibility mode which seems to work but may be more to do with windows 7 being brand new?)

But most programs run fine anyway, including photoshop and empire total war!
