64bit and 128bit? HELP!!

I have a K8vse MB and already have 2 512 sticks of ram in my board.

The MB only has 3 slots so I bought a 1 g stick but this is 128bit.

Tried all three and this gets to the desktop then reboots.

The MB states that these are 64bit slots.

Does that mean that I will not be able to use the all three or even just use the 128 bit one at all?

I can run the 128bit on its own, will this damage it or the MB

Memory sticks are not 128bit by themselves. The 128bit refers to the bandwidth, which is dependant on the motherboard and number of modules. The K8V-SE is a socket 754 motherboard only supporting single channel\64bit memory configurations. Regardless of what modules, or arrangement of modules you put in, it will remain single channel\64bit. Individual modules cannot be locked to 64bit or 128bit, only their speed and latencies differ.

Edit: Also, socket 754 motherboards and in particular older socket 754 CPUs memory controllers cannot usually handle 3 memory modules (especially if theyre all double-sided).

You mean the 1GB module is double sided and doesn't work. The motherboard doesn't accept double-sided modules, so you're stuck with using 3x512mb single-sided modules for a maximum of 1.5GB.

But on the MB it says that this is a 64bit slot. Does that mean that I cant use the 128bit in it. Which seems to be working ok?

The 1GB stick by itself will work, which is what I presume you mean...but it wont work while you also have 2x512MB modules in the motherboard. As you found:

I also said above that currently the maximum ram you can have in it is 1.5GB.
 
But it is working. It is running now as we speak.

The max that the MB can have is 3g ram i think.

I was just wondering as it says 64bit slots. But the 1g is 128bit, or double sided as you say.

Is that ok to run?

The 64bit marking is to remind you dual channel bandwidth is not attainable (single channel, socket 754 motherboard). Try looking for 128bit memory modules - they don't exist...

Sorry if I got the total memory allowed wrong, but you keep using 64bit and single-sided interchangeably when they refer to two different things...
 
I am not sure. I changed the ram around, as I have two 512mb of the same kind. But putting the gig in the last slot made it reboot. Switched the gig for the first slot and it seemed to work. I added a stick at a time which seemed to work.
