i just installed vista 64bit today and noticed there is a 64bit version of IE. why? there are no plugins that i can see and even if it did work, what's the point? what possible benefit can a 64bit browser offer over a 32bit one? :confused: :p

Exactly the same question that I asked after I installed Vista x64: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17864487

I've come to the conclusion that it's the same case with Windows Media Player 64-bit, there are no 64-bit MKV plugins using the Haali splitter or 64-bit DVD codec (Vista Business x64) so I might as well just use the 32-bit version that works with everything.
 
Because 64bit applications are better. Someone has to start and eventually plugins will come.
At the moment there's no point. But an application like that has to come out before people make plugins. So there will always be a period where you can't really use them.

That's about it really. It's there for future reasons - but at the moment it's borderline unusable (no flash etc.).

Please don't make complete and utter sense & sensible logic like that again.
 
There are no plugins yet. That's the most obvious bit. Why would you want to run 32-bit legacy applications in a 64-bit environment? Obviously the plugins will come and so will the codecs and, as more and more users adopt Vista, they will be improved upon and be and lot more efficient than the 32-bit equivalent. Compression programs will be quicker, decoders will be better, etc.

It's obvious really. Just give it time.

a 64-bit version of Flash will not appear for ages - Adobe know people want it, but as they have such a monopoly with that plugin for web content they just aren't bothering. Instead they just make numerous excuses for why it's taking so long. Maybe in about 5 years they'll release a beta version :p

The only reason (or at least one of the reasons) the 32-bit version of the browser is there is for compatibility.

As said above, plugins aren't really available for 64-bit IE yet

You're havin a laugh aren't you?

1. The human eye can distinquish fewer than 200,000 colours. 32 bit colour (which is really 24bit plus some switch bits I believe) offers 4,000,000,000,000 (ish)
64bit colour would therefor be.....
16,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 ish.
So, if you can see the difference, I dunno mate, you must have good eyes.

And Macroshaft, for all their evils, did not "limit" XP to 4GB, that's the most memory you can have in 32bit, even LINUX can only do 4GB on 32bit.
