So I'm thinking of buying some DDR5 and I'm not sure if it's worth going for 64GB or just 32GB (or maybe 48GB, but that seems odd, are there any compatibility issues with 48GB?).
Is there any need fir 64GB?
The PC is mostly for gaming but some video editing/encoding. I plan to upgrade to a 9950X3D or 9800X3D (once I've seen what the 9950X3D is like) and will use a RTX 4090.
Since the 4090 has 24GB should I look to have more than 32GB RAM?
Is it harder to get 64GB (2 x 32GB) stable at 6000MHz?

Trying to decide if it would be good, a waste of money or even problematic to get 64GB during Black Friday.

Potentially, because 48GB and 32GB sticks are dual rank, but I'd expect a 9000 series CPU to have a memory controller that can handle it.

The only gaming use I'm aware of is with modded games or long-run builder/strategy games like Skylines.

If you're prepared to buy something like the 9950X3D I'd just get 64GB now and save having to dump it later. Though, if you upgrade/switch platforms often then 32GB will likely keep long enough.

Yeah, there can be, but if you're going with an X870/X870E board I'd expect all the BIOS have been updated to support it by now. There might still be some old stock B650x/X870x boards that need an update.

Shouldn't be many games that need to eat into shared RAM with 24GB, but with such high-end hardware the £100 or so extra for 64GB seems so meagre to be worth much consideration

I've got 64GB with a 5950x and 7900XT....

Do I need 64GB? - No!
Is 32GB enough? - Maybe....

If you're looking at a new system, I would want 48 or 64GB, rather than doing 32GB now (I assume it'll be harder to get 4x16 working than 2x32, regardless of other factors... I'm happy to be told I'm wrong!)

When I move to DDR5 (whether that be AM5 or something else *cough, intel, cough lmfao * ) I'll be going 64 or 96GB from the off!

As above I've seen Cities Skylines go over 32gb, and the new Flight Simulator 2024 although I guess the latter was some form of issue (memory leak?).

I've had 64gb for a few years now.

msfs24 is showing signs 64gb might be needed. at london heathrow i'm getting 38gb ram usage just by sitting on the runway

DCS (another flight sim) happily eats through more than 32Gb of RAM too on the newer maps when things start to get busy.

Highest usage I've seen there is 40Gb but some of the upcoming maps may well smash through that looking at the size of them.

I also noticed that my 32GB was nearing full utilization in FS2024 when I was at London City airport in the Fenix A320. However, I wonder if future optimization will bring memory use down.

Optimisation in engine is generally most feasible at altitude as you don't need lots of small things and other models of aircraft and vehicles such as individual clumps of grass to help with the realism.

There might be some legs in optimisation bit I think map detail growth will probably outpace optimisation personally.

As I understand it, as I'm in the scroll hole of debating a build at the mo, 32Gb would be sufficient for a gamer if they have a decent CPU / GPU. If you tick those boxes, which it appears you do, 32Gb will be fine. 64Gb would be ideal if you were using it for more 'work' based rendering stuff rather than games.

I have 64GB in an AM4 system, currently sitting at 46% memory utilisation and its currently work time on the machine. There have been a few times when I've been gaming and haven't closed down the work stuff that it can hit 60% utilization, but its rare. I just happened to buy my RAM when it was really cheap about 18 months ago so 64GB then wasn't a huge cost over 32GB.
