Hi all
Looking at the Crucial 64Gb SSD card to install in my new motherboard (well used P5Q Deluxe) when Windows 7 comes out. I have a couple of questions.

Will the SSD be fine installing W7 ie I dont need to tweak anything? (firmware etc) before or after. Just plug it into the mobo and install?

How much space will be left after W7 installs? Im wanting to put some steam games on that I have backed up.

Sorry if these are newbie questions but SSD is brand new to me and I dont want to screw up the new install or buy to small an SSD!

Windows 7 does all the software tweaking.

You _don't_ need to do anything with the firmware. Though it will be recommended. The next firmware will include support for Windows 7 TRIM (SSD equivalent to defragging) - read the sticky at the top of the forum for more info.

And if you are unlucky enough to have a drive shipped with firmware 1711 then you will definitely want to update it as this firmware has been withdrawn. If this makes you nervous you might want to wait a while until drives with the new firmware are shipping.

Windows 7 takes around 20gb - but possibly more if you have a large amount of memory, as this will affect the hibernation and page files. This would leave under 40gb for games.

I'm running Windows 7 RC1 on a Crucial 64GB SSD and after installing Steam with a couple of games and LOTRO, along with Office etc and so on - I've got about 24GB free at the moment. It installed no problem to the SSD - the only thing I did do afterwards was go into Computer Management (Right click My Computer > Manage) and then under Event Viewer, I changed the default paths of where it was saving the log files to a folder on another drive so that it wouldn't be constantly writing loads of small files to the SSD. Not sure if it was really necessary, just thought that it might prolong the life of the drive! Might have been a bit OTT though. Also, I had to go back in later on to add the path to additional logs that get created after a while but aren't there initially when you have installed Windows.

The SSD is a really nice speed boost and well worth the purchase - even for my old machine (now 5 years old!)

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, with Office 2007, Firefox, Unreal Tournament and a few other apps installed; current disk usage is 17.3GB, including 2GB for the hibernate feature.

As long as you have more than a few GB of RAM, you may as well shrink the pagefile as it's just a waste of your limitted disk space. My page file is set to 1024MB as I have 4GB of RAM. If you are using the SSD in a desktop, you can disable hibernation to save yourself even more disk space.
