I'm getting myself a new rig soon but I carn't seem to decide which CPU to use.

I would overclock but out of the 6 pc's I've had none have overclocked or if they have the difference has been so small as not to be worth the effort.
I end up usually with having to reinstall windows which isn't any fun.

My current system won't even let my use optomised Bios settings without screwing up.

If I did get the 6700 will it overcklock aswell as the 6600 or better?

Quick browse through the net & these forums (especially Overclocking & Cooling) show you that the Intel C2D's overclock very very well, in particular the E6300 & the new E4300 :)

But to get a better result, you need to get a good mobo & fast RAM. That said, most mobos have come a long way in the last 2-3 years & all these-days offer decent overclockability

Thanks Guys I'll stick with the 6600 I think, my mate is building a new PC so I can see what he gets with his first.

6400 Here Orthos stable at 3.7ghz.

I have had and tested E4300,6300,6400,6600 and QX6700 Quad cores.

I dont think the extra 100 for the 6600 is worth it.The extra cache makes no difference in real terms that you would notice.

Save yourself some money and put it towards perfromance you will see like a better GFX card.

Reading these forums has helped me make my mind up. Was looking at E6400, now after a lot of reading decided on 4300. Thanks all those that post!

I think thats a good choice and does save you a lump of cash. Bear in mind there are plenty of new flavour Intel chips being released in the next month or two and the e4300 is due to be hit with a price cut (an e4300 at £80-£85 is quite compelling).

I did a fair bit of testing with an e4300 a week or two ago and can say with confidence they will overclock to 3GHz very easily (if you have basic overclocking knowledge) most likely that will be at default voltages as well. These chips react well to low temps (as do most chips) if you can keep it below 50°C TAT Load it will overclock further, but even at 60°C the e4300 should have no problem running 24/7 at a clean 3GHz, more if you got good cooling.

Hopefully i'll finish my build by april (doing it on the sly from wife..), have noticed the news about e6320 etc. Was hoping that'd mean a price drop for 4300! Decided on Tuniq Tower, if it fits in my case (cm centurian 5).

Lol probably with a shoe-horn! ;)

Always worth getting the ole' tape measure out, won't take long to do some measurements and insures you don't get a heatsink that don't fit (delayed build and extra postage costs!).

hmmm, case 180mm deep, T/Tower 153mm deep. Dont think it'll go once the mobo's in. Maybe cut hole in side of case...

I'm impressed by the 3.7 overclock but I'm never that lucky, I can wait a while well a month or maybe two but I do have the cash to hand now and I want a new toy.

I'm think my mate will have his new rig built in the next few days so I can can see if I like it and I'll see if I can get him to overclock it but like me he's never had much luck either.
He has all the parts but has to return the Motherboard to OCUK as he said it was broken in the box.

This is what he went for
Enermax Liberty 620W ELT620AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
Asus P5N32-E PLUS SLi nForce (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2
Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

The PSU may be different but it was an Enermax.
I would get the same as we tend to build the same rigs so we can test things when we have problems.
He is using a few old parts such as coolmaster case, HD's and DVD players, I would get a new case as then I would have enough parts to build a second PC even if I put the 1900xt in the new pc.
