I have a 6700k, asrock z170 gaming k6 motherboard and 16gb of corsair 3000mhz ddr4 being delivered today. I was wondering how different this setup will be to overclock compared to my old 2500k? Anyone got any tips?

Thanks for the tips guys :)

Cooling should be fine as i have a massive noctua nh-d14.

I'm reading about adaptive mode? Is this the same as the voltage offset? I know on my 2500k i have the voltage set to wind down as the clocks drop when not under load.

Ok, will leave that one alone, cheers :)

Will probably build over the weekend. Fingers crossed everything works ok. Bit worried about windows 10 having a paddy.

More worried about getting it reinstalled and activated as of course there is no key as it was a free upgrade from 8.

I think you can assign the licence to your microsoft account?

I'm thinking probably a clean install.

Parts have been confirmed as delivered, so i can have a play soon.

Hoping to get a 4.6ghz overclock.

Cheers

Cheers :)

I'm thinking the max safe voltage for day to day use is around 1.35? I may try to push it to 4.7ghz. But it is blindingly fast as it is. Witcher 3 is nailed to max 60fps whereas before i got a lot of dips.

Very pleased with the new setup and particularly impressed with the asrock z170 gaming k6 motherboard.

I may try pushing it a little further.

But to be honest, 4.6ghz is enough and i don't want to push the temps up too high.

So may stick where i am for now.

Definitey go for it :)

Very easy to do. I have even dropped my voltage down to 1.29v and it's still stable at 4.6ghz.

I'm certain i could get 4.7 or 4.8 but i think where it is at 4.6 is a good trade off between performance, heat and voltage.

It is best to use the offset feature i think. It should give you a lower voltage than the auto overclock. I have mine set to offset of +100mv but this will vary from board to board. I think the default voltage for these chips is 1.2v at normal clocks, so with the offset that gives me 1.3v minus a little bit of vdroop so i end up with 1.29v under full load.

I've not had much time to fiddle with my new setup to be honest.

But it seems 4.6ghz was a doddle to reach. Took me no time at all to get it stable at that speed. So i suspect most 6700k's will do 4.6 at around 1.3v.

4.8ghz at 1.3v must be one of the top 1% of chips.

I must say that although i have mine at 4.6ghz and 1.29v, i haven't tried pushing the multiplier up any more.

I just set it up and tested for stability. It was stable so i left it alone.

I'll play with it more over the coming weeks.

I just didn't see the point in kaby lake in the end. It's just skylake running a couple of hundred mhz faster.

You just know it will cost silly money on launch and offer nothing more than skylake.

I'm quite happy with a 6700k and z170 board.
