Hey all,

I recently purchased a BFG 6800 GS OC , love the card but when playing Battlefield 2 it can randomly freeze or shut down.
I've read reams of info about what this could be.

To sum up,
I have a 400w powersupply
I'm scared to flash my motherboard Bios and I have not for an A:\ to do so!
I've reinstalled drivers currently using 81.98.
Card is running at stock.
No temp warning or power shortage warning.

Futher info

> BRAND OF MOTHERBOARD - VIA

> CHIPSET - K8M800-M2

> SYSTEM PROCESSOR TYPE & SPEED AMD Sempron 2600+

> SYSTEM RAM - 1GB Ram 3200

> SYSTEM BIOS VERSION as installed, not changed

> DRIVER VERSION 81.98 Nvidia Forceware

> OPERATING SYSTEM – XP Sp2

IS there something I am missing or should attempt ? I made ther jump from fx5200 to the 6800 GS and it looks sweet but only till it locks up and reboots!

cheers all

that sempron 2600 is a serious bottleneck on with that card..

how does it shut down?? just reboot or does windows shut down normally?

reboot with no warning, the worse kind. U think the CPU may be causing it ? What cpu would you go for with my set up ?

BF2 is very sensitive to any overclocking. Is your CPU clocked. Also, try downclocking your card to the original 6800 GS levels (rather than the BFG OC levels)...

Wouldn't go replacing anything till you've exhausted all other options..

update.

I downlocked the card as suggested and it SEEMS to play a little longer b4 crashing to desktop again. I also updated my motherboard drivers , ticking another box of options.
Yet still i get the problems, can anyone else lend a hand ?
Also I want to patch the game, but the patch keeps wanting to install to my C: is there a way to get it to patch to another drive , where the game is installed ?
cheers all

I'd try and download the patch before chaning anything in your PC. Early versions of BF2 were buggy as hell (so I've read) and random crashes to desktops was a problem. Unfortuntately I don't know how to get around the C:/ problem. You could try one of the numerous BF2 forums knocking about.

sounds like a power problem to be honest. is it fine in windows and stuff?
which power supply is it, which manufacturer?

MY BFG 6800 OC came with the 82.12 drivers. Have you tried those?

Has the card got its own seperate lead from the PSU? ie, it's not feeding the hard drive as well etc?

My 6800LE used to do this with COD2, but after reading on this forum about the dedicated PSU feed, I had a good look and found a cable to supply just the PSU and everything was fine afterwards.

its a 400w power supply, cant see the make as it on, and it has its own power supply using the cables that came in the box - so I had thought that the power was not an issue.

As for the patch, i managed to free the 1.6GB needed for the 1.03 patch , but now I need another 3GB for the next patch - I just have not got that as i partioned my drive with a c:\ 10GB for XP partion.

i ve reinstalled the game fresh as well and th patch so Ill see how it fairs when I next get a chance to get a game. I dont have any of these problems with COD2 or AOE3 so i figure it must be Bf2 + some minor tweaking needed on some part of my pc! thx for the advice guys :)

I fixed the patch installer , found a site that advised me to to this : Not my work , but its worked :)

"I found solution that worked for me (with 1.3GB free space on system drive ).

It is advised that you create backup of system registry before proceeding.

Run regedit

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CurrentVersion

Do not expand CurrentVersion node, just highlight it.
Find ProgramFilesDir variable in the window on the right side of the screen.
It will point to your program files directory (usually "C:\Program Files").
Change that path to folder on a drive that has enough space to patch BF2. Close regedit (this will save changes) and run the patch. After the patching is finished open regedit again and restore the previous value to the ProgramFilesDir (don't forget to do it - your system may become unstable if you won't).

This worked for me. I hope it will help at least some of you too. "

hope that helps others.

as for memory timings- now theres a new area I know zero about !! :)
but its worth it to play that dammed game!
