680i users : chipset fan

Most people I know run this noisy fan at 50% but it's still too noisy for me and lowering it further (fan controller or resistor) makes it ineffective.

Are most people who are on air "putting" up with it ?

I'm about to build my 680i rig - is it worth even thinking of upping the FSB without this installed? I have a P180 and have added an extra 120mm input fan at the front, so there should be plenty of airflow in the case.

I dont actually think its that noisey ? Mine is on 100% always

I guess it's all down to hearing dude and how quiet your other components are. About the noisiest thing in my rig after the chipset fan is the electrical buzz from my psu. After that probably the slight buzzing my LCD panel makes on certain websites.

I really can't hear the fan at all over the 'air' noise my psu spits out, as above said, depends how quiet your pc it

Yep, if you start putting in quiet components or volt modding your fans, then the noise those louds components were masking becomes apparent. The fan on the 680i is brutal by the way. Turn off your case fans to hear it

Im watercooling the CPU,

Doing this has allowed me to install a Zalman fan bracket with a 120mm Fan above the northbridge

It takes away the whining noise of the 40mm chipset fan, and with it being a large 120mm fan, it cools the memory aswell

a lot of aftermarket heatsinks will fit the NB but I would still go with an active solution rather than passive. The fan at 50% was still too much for my ears so it just had to go.

had a mcx159-cu fitted first which kept it cool , now on a mcw30 water block which is a bit better

What did you do with the southbridge , I thought about watercooling the northbridge but the 8800gtx covers the southbridge and thought it would be near impossible to add anything aftermarket to it.

i got that mcx159-cu there at the moment and i just use the top slot for gfx , but i got one of those extreme spirit 2 i am going to fit ,i am hoping as its offset i will be able to use both gfx slots , Eva2000 over on xtremesystems has one fitted to his striker and even without cutting down the studs he has two 8800's fitted so it should work and you get a nice blue light on the fan

Sounds a good idea,

Thing to note is the Reference boards southbridge and the Asus design look slightly different in positioning.

The Evga is more towards the first gfx slot while the striker is further to the left

probrably work for you and not quite fit for the reference boards

You will have to let us know if you decide to do it, how it goes

Yeah your right on the striker the middle of the sb is in line with the middle pcie slot , wouldnt be able to get a physics card in but cant see me wanting one anyway , will post a pic if it works
