Hi,

Thinking of getting a 6870 as they are pretty cheap really.

But is it worth it when paired with my current hardware (see sig)?

New build is out of the question for a while so £120 for a fair boost in performance would be nice.

I only play at 1280 x 1024 and really have no issues with games and fps but it's just Red Orchestra 2 has given me some fps issues, but I'm not sure if that's more game related and will be fixed so.

So what do people think, 8800gtx to 5870 or 560, worth it?

If you're sticking with 1280 x 1024 why not save some money and get an HD 6770 / 5770. Still a decent improvement on your old 8800gtx but saving at least £35 and will play anything you want at that resolution.

When you're eventually ready to make the leap to higher res gaming you can pick up a 7 series or whatever latest gen is at that time.

Hmmm interesting suggestion, hadn't thought of looking into those ranges, they seem a little too budget perhaps, a new screen is on my radar but not till probly xmas time so don't think I would want to up graphics again so soon.

The only thing I would say is that, by Christmas time, the range and relative price / performance may have changed significantly if AMD pull out the stops with their 7 series release. NVidia will also be playing catch up in the new year so there might be some bargains to be had then.

If you can get by for now I would recommend holding off on your new purchase till you get a new screen.

I'm just not sure you're going to get the benefit if you buy a card like a 460 or a 6870 now. You say you won't have a high res screen till the end of the year. 460s and 6870s aren't going to get any more expensive between now and then so just wait.

When Chrimbo comes stick a post in the graphics forum asking what card is best value for money and you're away.

I probly don't need to upgrade at all for a while, ro2 is first game i've struggled with but so are many people with much newer cards then me so I'll wait and see what happens.

Danke

I think the 6870 will work pretty well with your sig. Running 1280x1024 you will be able to run most games on Ultra settings with AA. All 6870's currently come with a Deus Ex download voucher that you can sell for £15-£20, making them even better value. Some additionally come with Dirt3, putting the cherry on the top. Sell your 8800GTX for ~£25 and the upgrade cost will be quite low.
