6850 $200
6870 $250

Pinches of salt on standby

Edit: Techpowerup reports:
"An pair of early listings by a Dutch online store indicates what prices of some Radeon HD 6800 series products could look like, in that part of the world. The Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 (part number 11180-00-20R), is listed at €158.82 without taxes (€189 with it); and Sapphire Radeon HD 6870 (part number 21179-00-40R) at €214.29 w/o taxes (€255 with it). We conservatively estimate the USD pricing to look like $199 for the HD 6850, and $249 for the HD 6870, on the basis of this listing."

If these prices are true, then we can expect about £200 for a 6870? Seems a bit high if it's aimed at beating the 460 and not the 480. £180 maybe would be nicer... but we'll wait and see.

If its very close to 5870 performance, then overclocked it will beat a stock 480gtx most likely, just like an overclocked 5850 can easily beat a 480gtx, at £180, thats not at all bad. Thing is, how much slower is the 6850.

People really do seem to forget, 2560x1600 in Crysis, without AA< no memory limitations the 5870 is like 98% faster than a 460gtx 1GB, at lower res its still 50%+ faster, with playable framerates vs unplayable framerates on the 460gtx.

a 460gtx is no where near 5850/5870 performance, no where near, theres entirely no reason for them to price a 5870 class card at 460gtx price, unless they can easily.

I think we'll be seeing, in Jan/Feb, the real 5770 replacement which will likely be 20-30% faster and will probably be within 15-20% of the 460gtx performance, but at way way less than £175 the 460gtx is at.

you have not replied to Big Waynes post in there yet regarding your figures/percentages.

Kinda prices I'd expect if they are indeed actually the x770 and x750 parts.... you'd have thought after nVidias renaming they'd have seen how badly it screws things up.

The naming won't matter one little bit if these cards come in at decent prices with much better performance than there nvidia rival cards.

no just confuse dozens of people who "upgrade" from a 5870 to a 6870.

Agreed, they should have been given 6840 & 6860 monikers or something, as 6770 equally doesn't do them justice, I guess as they have moved up a performance and price bracket that the 67xx moniker usually occupies...

Edit: I suppose they could be called 6780 and 6790?

You'd have to be a bit dim not to realise there's something fishy about an 'upgrade' that costs 2/3 the price or the original component. And not to have looked up anything online at all.

I actually think changing the naming is a stupid thing to do personally, but only because it makes them look bad. The actual impact on consumers will be absolutely minimal to non-existant.

Sure, I can see people upgrading their £320 cards to sub-£200 ones "hoping" for the better performance due to a higher number. Seriously, isn't it better that AMD releases the cards with one number up than the other way around? Who'd buy 6770 for £200?

Its not spin, spin is saying the 460gtx is close to the 5850, let alone a 5870, its not, its never, in games that aren't gpu limited it can be, but in games that aren't cpu limited a 460gtx can get within 10fps of 480gtx sli and a 5970, does that really mean its close to those cards?

The 460gtx 1gb is slow compared to Nvidia/AMD high end right now, thats just fact, its miles behind a 5870, seriously, is there spin needed, its 100% slower in the most gpu limited situation in the most gpu limited game, how is that spin, please explain that to me.

Take any non gpu limited game, from Nvidia's most favoured games to AMD's, the 5870 is rarely less than 35% ahead, mostly 40%+.

Techpowerup themselves list the difference as 40% at 2560x1600 on average across all their results, sans AA, which gives you roughly speaking 1920x1200 + 2/4xaa type performance. Look though the individual results of every game, there are some where the 460gtx is as close to the 5870 as 480gtx sli, those would be cpu limited situations and some quite old games. Exclude the cpu limited games, theres not a huge number but enough to severely skew the average performance diff numbers, and the 5870 is miles and miles faster than a 460gtx 1GB.

As for responding to Big Wayne, from recollection I didn't ask him any questions that I wanted a response to, I was just irked by his posting and condecending nature of every response of his in the thread and posted something to point out the flaws. If I get round to it, I'll check out the thread.

Your average consumer isn't that bright ("trust me I work in retail")... they'll be rubbing their hands in glee at the lower price while thinking they are getting an upgrade...
