My friend is looking to get a 6950 and has asked his opinion on what PSU to get for it, it's not a masivly high end spec computer will should run on anything around 650-700w

The last thing i bought for a computer was my BFG 295GTX on release which was ages ago, so im here for help :P

If you can, can i get a few links of idea's for what he can have?

I would assume price as cheap as pos but anything you can throw at me for now would be helpful, thanks.

That's a good start for him, he's only just ordered the card then looking to go to 6GB RAM and W7, struggling to get 80FPS on Quake Live as his hardwear is old and decrepid.

His only concearn is a PSU with dule power cables for his new card.

You mean two pci-e? x6? If the gpu takes a x8 you'll be able to use a molex converter also, which will likely come with the gpu. Those psu's should be fine and both come with x6 and x8 pci-e.

What spec is he looking to get? 6GB means he's hitting nelhem up not sandybridge?

Antec do ok psu's but not anything special. They do the job so to speak. At that price you have the choice of a few great psu's however.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-004-XF&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= . Far better than the antec because its seasonic design and seasonic make the best psu's around.

Again, seasonic design but this time modular. You loose some wattage but gain the fact that your case will be a lot tidier and it will be an easier build. Like I said his pc doesn't require anything over 500w, but 600w is still a good thing to aim at.

Elsewhere in other well known shops:

600W Enermax NAXN ENP600AWT PSU, 80 PLUS, 85% Efficiency, Silent Fan

£72 and just like seasonic psu's, top quality. This isn't modular.

Corsair Gaming Series GS 700 CMPSU-700G UK 700W Power Supply

£76 - good quality, personally would take the XFX 750w from above over it. Again not modular.

System Spec;

Intel Core 2 Duo CP E8400 @ 3GHz
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L iP35 Express (775) Motherboard <-- According to CPUZ
DDR2 4GB RAM, no idea what make...

PCI-E yeah thats the one lol, my bad... There x6. Any new suggestions? The more he tell's me about his current setup the more i realise why he has FPS issues on a game like Quake...

EDIT: Thanks 8igdave, very helpful.

You're welcome. Make sure you get a spec me thread up when he comes to upgrading the cpu. As if he's going for an upgrade he will be wanting sandy bridge and he's got a choice of 4gb or 8gb. Can't do 6gb as it's not tri-channel. Well you can but you will loose the bandwidth bonus of dual channel and run it in single channel instead.

Also might I suggest he considers the 480GTX range. They are very good value for money at the moment. Equiviliant to a 570GTX and just a tad behind a 580GTX. The gigabyte SE and SOC versions have upgraded coolers that are very quiet and keep the card cool. Otherwise the standard 480GTX is quite hot and can get loud, but still a good card. Worth a look.

Also if he gets a 6950 make sure you unlock it to a 6970. It's a free performance boost, google it.

Found the performance boost whilst browsing the forums actually, he's not perticually strong on computer tech and stuff but awesomely good at games. Il try to get him sign'd up so he can ask questions, i know how good the community is :).

I was wondering the same thing, so if I wanted to upgrade to a 6950 then my BeQuiet 530W PSU will be fine?

What about if I overclock/flash it to a 6970, would it be ok for that aswell?

Would really like some confirmation on this please!

I'm not sure I'd trust that psu to be able to output over 420w reliably so I wouldn't suggest it. But might want to get a second opinion on that.

Just to clarify, on my post before when I said 500w is enough I meant being able to output 500w reliably.

I think it's meant to be quiet easy. You could do it for him possibly. Get him signed on, other shops will give you free delivery with just 30 posts unlike ocuks 3month rule + like 300 posts. Though I think that ocuk's really actually rewards their forum users better, but either works for me.

Max. combined power 12V (W) 420

Continuous power (W) 530

Peak power 500 ms (W) 580

From those figures you don't think it will be enough for a 6950?

Here is what the AMD site says about the power requirements for a 6950 - 500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended

Oh ok then, maybe better than I thought. Bare in mind that if you are going to unlock it it is going to draw more power than the 6950 but should be fine i guess. Only one way to find out ;) haha.

Yeah haha, I just hope I don't need to buy another PSU if I ever want to upgrade my GPU. Paying an extra £60 for a PSU aswell as £200 for a GPU doesn't really appeal to me!

Does anyone else know if my PSU will be good enough for a 6950?

According to the website it can give a peak power rate of 580W? So does that mean if I game for a hour or two then it'll provide 580W of power which is more than enough for a 6950 but not if I continually game 24/7?

Or have I got it totally wrong..

Oh you mean you are upgrading the psu anyway? Definitely spend more then. It will save you money in the long run. i thought you already owned that psu.

Sorry for confusing you, I already have the BeQuiet 530W in my system right now. I just want some confirmation before I buy a graphics card like the 6950.

I was looking at buying this one - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-119-MS

According to OCuk the MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 2048MB card requires:

- Maximum Power Consumption: 250W (Typical 190W)
- 2x 6pin PCI-E power connectors required
- 450W minimum PSU recommended

So from that information my 530W should be more than enough right?

I used the Antec Power Supply calculator and it's saying my system uses 265W of power without a graphics card so if I buy the 6950 then it'll be a total of 515W.

Hopefully I'm right about this haha

According to techpowerup.com 6950 uses very similar amount of power as 6850.

I am running a computer with

6850 775/1000 @ 1000/1180
Athlon II x4 [email protected]
Couple of HDD's a DVD, webcam etc.

I am using 330 true watts PSU I paid 25 quid for the PSU and computer case together. I've been running this PSU for over 1.5 years. So you definitely don't need a 700 or 600 or similar PSU
