6970 eyefinity problem

Just wondering if anyone is running eyefinity from one of the new 6xxx cards.

I just upgraded from a 5870 eyefinity setup to a 6970 and can't get things running.

Have been running 3x24" monitors without any problems on the 5870. I had one DVI, one VGA>DVI via adapter and one VGA>DP via active adapter.
Since the 6970 has mini DP I bought one of the adapters from OCUK which works fine on the DVI monitor.
The problem is connecting the other 2 monitors. Unfortunately these are VGA only and I have them connected to the 2 DVI ports via DVI>VGA adapters. There is a signal on one but not on the other. The lower port does not seem to output a signal this way. The port works with a direct DVI connection.
I can't understand why the 2 DVI outputs will not run the 2 VGA monitors via adapters.

Any help really appreciated guys.

I have a similar set up with using the 6950 and the problem you are having is that the second DVI port is a single link DVI and as such does not carry a VGA signal across it so you can only use it for DVI.

Which adapter did you get for the Mini-DP to DVI, was it single or dual link? If it is a dual link you can use one of your DVI to VGA converters, if it was a single link then you could you'll have to buy the active dual link converter. You'll have 2x VGA and 1x DVI in the end :)

have a look at this Wiki article: DVI Connectors

I bought this one from the site which appears to be single link.
I did try out both the VGA adapter monitors on this and neither worked as you said.
Bit of an odd decision not to make both DVI ports support adapters!!

Do your monitors only support VGA? As for why they didn't set both up, it saves on the circuitry and board space I guess.
The same company which made the converter you bought, Wieson, doesn't seem to make a mini-DP>DVI, but it does look like they make mini-DP>VGA as you can see on the following page:
http://support.amd.com/us/eyefinity/Pages/eyefinity-dongles.aspx

I did a fair bit of research before buying the cards and thankfully in the end I only needed one mini-DP to DVI.

Unfortunately when I setup my eyefinity I couldn't source 2 more identical monitors. The ones I ended up with used the same panel but were VGA only.

Had a look around for mini DP to dual active DVI and they are pretty expensive. The cheapest actually seems to be the Apple one!!
Don't think I'll be forking out another £60+ after spending a load on this card + adapter + new PSU. Might be DSR return time!

Dual active would allow you to use DVI monitors at a later date, otherwise just go for an active mini-DP to VGA, they appear to range from £10-£25 odd which isn't to bad.

In your first post you said you used an active DP to VGA, maybe look at getting a passive mini-DP to DP? might be even cheaper..
edit:
Doh ! this :
I was using a DP to VGA adapter for one of the monitors.
Could I plug this into a mini DP to DP?
Yes :D I think the passive should do fine since the clock generation will be done by your active DP to VGA. Perhaps someone can confirm this but in theory it should be good :)

Dp to VGA adapters on the mini Dp to Dp dongles. No need to buy $100 active adapters unless you are hung up about using digital.

I don't know why others don't work... Mine has been running fine since the Eyefinity6 cards were released.
Using 1 mini Dp to DVI dongle for DVI monitor connection
2 mini Dp to Dp dongles with PASSIVE Dp to VGA adapters for VGA monitor connections.
I don't know why people insist on buying expensive active adapters when $20 passive VGA will work.

I got this off of some other forum after a quick search, and it made me almost face-palm :P I stand to be corrected, but the clock generation is only needed for digital outputs (DVI and HDMI) so you can use passive mini-DP to DP and then attach the DP to VGA.

Sounds good and thanks for the help mate.
Just out of curiosity - I see you are running x-fire. Does that allow you to use the dual link on the 2nd card or does that card just run as a slave?

No problem :)
In XFire you can use all available ports on both cards, but remember that the HDMI ports are slaved to one of the DVI ports on each of the cards. The only trick comes in when you use Eyefinity since, from what I have read, you can only form the groups needed for Eyefinity from the monitors attached to the same gfx card.

I'll test it out tonight and let you know ^^
