6970 or 6990 or something else

Too many if's and but's atm but I am interested to see what the 69XX range will be like. Can't see much point ' if ' I were to buy a 69XX card to purchase anything lower than a 6970 but we shall see how accurate that is.

Would like to really hold to my 4870x2 until the next mobo and cpu upgrade, which will most likely be sometime next year, nothing's certain yet though. I think Doom 4 will at the very least be a major benchmark in gaming so it would be nice to upgrade at that point. Realistically though this could be a long wait and I do see myself upgrading before 2012 anyway, lol.

However, regardless of the above, if I do upgrade earlier than expected then (new games stressing it too much etc) then I would prefer to go down the single gpu road, will most likely be an nvidia card. A 480 with a custom cooler would probably be fine if the prices weren't over the top. If the 7000 AMD series were due then it would be different.

I thought that the GTX580 was a rebranded GTX490? And that this was due to the fact NVIDIA don't in the slightest bit have a new architecture, especially seen as they only just pushed the last one out with a huge failure % in production.

It's going to be another GTX480, in that it costs a **** load and does bugger all to justify the cost...Especially when a 5970 is only a fraction more and 40% faster.

I was of the understanding that SSD don't offer much gaming performance over conventional hdd??

Try an SSD, then say that. Right now I'm physically stressed because my partition corrupted on my ssd's and untill I recover the data im back onto a 500GB sata hard drive....and man, it blows. Yer your pc seems quick but it's like anything. Once you try better you see the flaws in the older model.

Lol at getting a 580, does anyone actually even know the spec's yet? (even if only rumoured)

Yup, same architecture as GTX4xx range, so probably 2GB of ram with dual GPU's. Probably a 10% increase in the GPU clock, if that. Maybe a few more filter pipelines, some more shader cores.
Oh yer, and a boat load of cash just to top it off.

gonna wait for the new cpus and buy everything together, pc needs a good upgrade after 3+ years ;o

Then don't but budget stuff and buy top of the line and upgrade every 5 years. I upgraded this year to dual 5970's, last time I upgraded was in 2006. Wont need to upgrade now until 2014, maybe 2015.

Saying that though I don't like dual 5970's and if the 6990 proves to be any better than I'm going to switch to those. Look out for my review of them. Hopefully will get some of the first out. I already saved the cash up for them (£1500).

the 580Gtx is not close to being ready... Damn i dont think they have even fixed the crap arc that make the 480GTX yet...

Role on the 6990 or the 7990...

The GTX580 is on the same architecture as the 400 series, so yer it's a long way off. Q2 2011, but knowing NVIDIA probably Q1 2012.

I will wait for reviews of both cards until I make a decision.
580gtx vs 6970
Or that's the plan anyway....
Or I might get the first thing that hits the stores.

I'll wait for a review of the 6970. If it's good, then I'll buy it. If not, then I shall wait for the 7000 series/Kepler.

I can't see the 580 being here before Xmas in all honesty
I think it's a tactic to tell amd we have something to compete
Oh but its way off complete

If nvidia say they are going to release 580 before 6970, what are the chances of amd releasing earlier than suggested ?

580 or 6970. Will see reviews then decide when waterblocks available - or whichever is available at beginning of Dec with a block.
Currently favouring the ati offering slightly as find it slightly harder to give cash to nvidia but reality will be in price/performance/overclocking under water.

Looks like a good bit of competition this Christmas for our money then :) november should be interesting. Although 2500 580's to evga?? That sounds bad :S
