The stuff on the 6990 is apparently some kind of phase change TIM pad. Not sure what is on the 6970.

not a clue what grease is used, but did see instructions for a waterblock installation and the recomended putting it on in lines so it looked a bit like a union jack flag fi you gat my drift

My Powercolor 6970 @stock idels at about 34/36*c highest I have seen it in games was about 81*c and that was affter about 5 hours playing Crysis.

I did overclock it just to run afew benchmarks even then @950 on the core it never seemed to go above 80*c

maybe look for an Asus direct CUII 6970 that maybe died and is going cheap on the bay?
Takes 3 slots tho. not sure if it'll even work

they have only just come out , will be a while before a faulty one is on the bay me thinks . i think they are the best looking twin fan cooler in a long time

you could try contacting powercolor and explain the problems you have had with the card since you bought it and could you come to an arrangment to exchange it for a powercolor pcs+ version

I've got 2 x new HIS HD 6970 from OCUK and they are running insanely hot.

I've got 3 x Vipers blowing air directly onto the cards, with 2 x PCI-E spacing between them.

Primary GFX is reporting the following after 45mins of FurMark:

Temp1 : 93'C
Temp2 : 95'C
Temp3 : 97'C

Secondary GFX is reporting:

Temp1 : 89'C
Temp2 : 91'C
Temp3 : 93'C

This is pretty damn hot. Ironically, my Motherboard is running 30'C during this load; now i've reseated my CPU, it's running 61'C max load during these temps.

I've experienced several PC restarts which has GOT to be down to these cards during high end games.
