6970 vs 570

If he doesn't have an SSD, that would be a very good upgrade route also.
At 1680x1050 a 1.2gb 570 would be fine for a while to come yet.

I went from a 5870 which supposedly has worse drivers to a 570 which supposedly has better drivers and whilst I saw a great increase in performance,easily run BF3 at ultra but all of a sudden I was getting graphics tearing on certain maps. with the AMD card had no graphical issues.
Really these days its very hard to make a choice between similar cards, so i go with the best price and make sure people who have them are generally happy. If there is a bundled game even better! I tend to swap between NVIDIA and AMD each time.
