6990 + 6970 Crossfire

i would say put the 6970 my primary PCIe slot and the 6990 in the second because that way if a game as issues with CF u will be able to disabled CF

I took Gareth's advice and never looked back tbh. 6970 as primary

6990 only as 1 bridge connector mate.

Yup! Try two = fail hahahahahaha

But if there were issues with CF would it not fall back to the 6990 card as its in the primary PCIe slot ?

The 6990 is 2gpus in crossfire. What Gareth is saying is that if you have crossfire issue, you cannot disable it on the 6990 as the primary card but you can if the 6970 (1 gpu) is the primary card

Well because im on Quad 5970 when a game which is not often does not like quadfire & i disable crossfire which leaves me running on a single 5970 i find that most games run fine with duel GPU.

It maybe the case that after duel GPU then your likely to run into more issues, so maybe it would be better to have the 6990 as primary so when you disable crossfire your left with dual GPU performance that my not be an issue where as tri fire was.

But im on the 5xxx so it maybe a different in that case.

Whatever works mate. I ran with 6990+6970 for ages and then found it a lot more stable with 6970+6990 :)

I hate that you can get 80%+ GPU usage lol!

Good luck

oh how i wished i was 19 again and living at home!

now the wife wont let me have that kind of setup. i have the spare bed plenty i visit that quite often :)

i found some games that didn't like even dual GPU e.g TDU 2 when it was release, it took about a month or so for a cf profile to let it run off 1 gpu on a dual cards

not if u put the 6970 in the primary PCIe slot and the 6990 in the second

that way u can disable CF and it'll just run off the 6970...

That's actually an excellent idea.
I remember how bad the witcher 2 would run on Crossfire compared to a single GPU, and dead rising 2 had negative crossfire scaling at first :p

If you remember Crysis 2, it was practically unplayable in some sections due to the dual GPU issues it has.

Gareth, did you try using radeonpro to disable crossfire on the 6990?

I'm looking to put my 6990 in the primary 16x slot and my 6950(70) in the bottom 8x slot and living with the occasional crossfire problem. Better that I think than putting the 6990 in an 8x slot and losing too much performance. My MB does have two 16x slots but that would leave no gap between the cards and also mean I need to buy a new soundcard (pci slot currently used by this).

I'll swap you a wife for my setup. I am over 25 mate and avoided marriage. I am in a relationship with my PC. My girlfriend doesn't know, so don't tell her pls!

i didn't try radeonpro.

if u check your bios u may have a option to change the primary gpu slot...

Not an option in my bios unfortunately but thanks for the suggestion. I think if I update it I get to change the primary between the 16x slots but not the 8x. I'll ask on my motherboard owners thread.

Anyone else used radeonpro with the 6990 to disable crossfire? Does it work ok?

i've just checked it out and it doesn't look like u can disable cf on dual card .. theres a crossfireX option but im sure that with only work when using 2+ cards.

That's a shame. Thanks a lot for trying this out and letting me know.

When my 6990 is spare*, I'll bung it in with my 6950 and see how I get on. Hopefully I'll be able to run it as primary without too many issues for the games I play. Tbh I don't really need the extra power at the moment (single 24" screen) but I'm looking to use it with BF3.

* Being used for bitcoin mining at the moment in another pc. Not very profitable now but I've had it since May and it has almost paid for itself and the electricity. Maybe I'll sell it but I may as well try it out for a few weeks and decide. For now it's still just about earning its keep mining.

You cant in CCC any more but you can with Radeonpro by disabling CAT IA it will disable CF on a dual GPU card & i have tested it myself.

Putting a Dual GPU card in a 8x slot will give you 4x per GPU on that card.
