So I bought a punchbag/kickbag for the garage measured the punchbag but forgot about the drop needed by the mount (thing with chains, whatever it's called), so the punchbag drags on the floor.

It would only need to go up a few inches, taking links would be the answer but that thing is very tough - I don't think I would be able to bash it apart with anything and I don't have any welding equipment.

Is there anywhere I can get a shorter "mount" with not as many chain links in?

Everywhere I look online seems to be just one size fits all scenario.

Thanks guys, seems like a simple thing but I just stood there staring at it earlier and nothing popped into my head - I left the garage feeling defeated (and seeing if I could take the bag back for a shorter one) but I'll have a look tomorrow.

To be honest, I'm still not sure how using a padlock on some chains will shorten them? Just had a look and it just ties them together? Same length etc...

Can you not lift the bag up, pull the excess chain through the hole and back round to the bag then lock the links together to shorten it?

Imagine if it was a rope, you'd pull it to take the slack then tie a knot in it but instead you're putting a pad lock in?

Take some photos, I'm sure that will help us see the situation more clearly.

Padlock idea is good. They also sell shackles in B&Q. Just pull a few links along the length together and shackle them up, or use the shackle to make a new top hook. If no B&Q near you then you can get them on eBay or any boating shop. Probably fishing shops too :)

This accurate render might shed some light on it.

Bah, bought the padlocks now the bag swings freely but the "heavy duty" mount looks like it wouldn't take much of a pounding before it ripped itself out of the garage roof. I wouldn't be too bothered but I'm in a town house and directly above my garage is the kitchen. I don't really fancy ending up with that on my head.

Not sure what to do now. I've previously read about putting some wood across joists so that they take the load easier - I don't know how accurate that is.

Worst comes to the worst I guess I can Ebay the bag and get myself one of those freestanding things, I don't think they are much cop though are they?

Get a wall mount if you can.

One side is plasterboard and the other is, breezeblocks - not sure they will hold it? This is why I've put it on the ceiling - there is a piece of wood that goes across the garage, where the garage door ends when its open (if that makes sense).

Yep Delvis, I have looked into them a bit - Obviously the bag is 6ft, plus the hanging chains (which I could have course leave the padlocks on) but would need one that was as high as the ceiling or it's not going to fit. Even with all the chains padlocked there was only a few inches clearance from the floor.

Will have a look though.
