6Gb/sec SATA worth it?

Speccing up a new rig and before I choose the motherboard is it worth the premium for 6Gb/sec SATA?

How relevant is it in the near future?

are you gonna buy a £330+ SSD with read speeds of over 300mbs to use on it?

Probably not haha but was looking at getting a Intel X25-M 80GB, just as on OS drive though 80GB seems overkill. Is the X25-V a better choice for this? I take it read speed is the main thing you need as on OS drive.

the 80g has nice speeds 250/70, the 25-v is only 170/35, if you can run to it id get the 80g version, and maybe some time in the future after ur O/S has had numerous updates and you get some apps on there ul be glad you had the extra space. do you play games? if so it would be nice to have 1 or 2 choice games on there also for fast level loading

Ok you've convinced me. Going to build a beast of a computer, I've had nearly 3 years out of this rig, time to sell it on and start afresh!

Yeah I play the odd game here and there so good plan.

I'm not to sure but i don't think there is anything out currently that would utilise the 6/gbps, i might be wrong tho. However it could be worth paying the little bit extra for the option in the future.

When more SSD's come out using that speed then yes, at the mo i'd say no, aas it's not really used.

On a new build i would go for sata 3 MoBo but for the best current affordable SSD's i would use the sata 2 connection! (Re the cruicial C300 128GB thread)

That way when affordable performance utilising sata 3 SSD's are around you will not have to worry!

Are the USB3 and SATA 3 specs finalised? are what we currently have on the new motherboards "it" so to speak or will the spec change?

Like on the i5 boards don't they have to drop the PCI-E slot to 8X to provide the full bandwidth of Sata 3?

It was something I read in a review.

That's only because the i5 boards only have 16 PCIe lanes available due to the controller being in the CPU so they have to sacrifice PCIe lanes for the USB3 and SATA 6Gb connections.

No because the PCIe is still in the chipset on the X58 platform and it has enough lanes.

That's not true as such it is on the gigabyte but not on the i5 asus p7p55d-e pro, evo, deluxe.

These boards have a chip called the plx chip that stops this from happening and u still get x16 gfx lanes unless u crossfire which then it drops to x8.

Ihave the -e pro version but a warrning if u go for a i5 board do not get the standard p7p55d version as this board does not have the plx chip only the pro, eve and deluxe version have this chip

It also has the nec USB 3 chip on as well which gives u the full rate with no gfx drops to it's an exellent board search for a review for the pro version they will give u more idea how the plx chip works.

The only problem is that it becasue how the plx chip works I think it only gives u a max of 5gb and not 6gb but I would have that over having a x8 gfx slot
